2 Candidacy What are the criteria for eligibility aside from meeting the GPA requirement and completing community service hours?

3 Candidacy Process Why do you want to be considered for NHS membership?
NHS is an organization for students interested in continuing to serve the school and community. Students who are leaders both in and out of the classroom, possess strong character and integrity (i.e., do the “right thing”) and are dedicated to serving others make the strongest NHS candidates. You must show proof of what makes you stand out in the areas of character, leadership, service, extracurricular activities, honors/awards/recognitions. Complete Candidacy Packet, obtain 2 teacher recommendations, submit service forms

4 Timeline Candidacy Packet is due to Mrs. Harrison in the Main Office no later than Thursday, March 8th by 2 p.m. Late packets are not accepted! We recommend making a copy of your packet. Induction will be held on May 23rd at 6 p.m. (same as Awards Night)

5 School & Community Involvement
Notice the distinct sections for school involvement & community activities Clubs, teams, musical groups, community organizations Provide thorough explanations

6 Leadership Two separate areas
Demonstrate initiative in promoting school activities Demonstrate initiative, reliability and dependability in organized groups (not always school related) Describe how you display leadership in these groups

7 Honors/Awards/Recognitions
Honors, awards and recognitions for outstanding achievements Think beyond the paper certificate (and Honor Roll) School, athletic, musical, work, volunteer, church affiliated, Boy/Girl Scouts Explain the criteria and significance: what did earning that honor entail? Descriptions help explain the significance!

8 Service Actions undertaken by the student which are done with or on behalf of others without any direct financial or material compensation to the individual performing the service Service hours to count for candidacy: July 1- packet deadline

10 Character Demonstrate consistent record of conduct or behavior through academic integrity, respect, responsibility and trustworthiness. 2 Teacher Recommendation Forms Give 1 to each teacher; teacher will turn it to Main Office Provide the form in person; say “thank you!”

11 Character (staff feedback)
Integrity: No recorded incidents of cheating, copying or intentional dishonesty; leadership in class, willingness to go above and beyond what may be expected Positive behavior: No record of skipping classes or violating school regulations; no record of behaving in a derogatory, rude or disrespectful way to students or adults Ethics: indication that the student chooses to do the right thing in all situations

12 Completed Packet Typed essay
Sections NEATLY written out in pen/may provide additional paper if needed Responses for all required components must be filled in Required signatures from student and parent, plus sponsors on sections indicated Service forms Handed in separately 2 Teacher Recommendation Forms

13 If you are accepted… Do you have the time?
Live up to your Candidacy Packet! If you don’t continue to uphold the requirements of candidacy, you can be placed on probation and/or other honors recognizing you as an NHS member will be withheld.

14 If accepted… Summer service: (20 hours)
Set amount of hours during the school year; hours submitted each quarter Meetings (1x a month approximately for mins.) Participation in projects throughout the year Ongoing GPA requirement of 88%
