Mrs. Collins’ Course Expectations 2009-2010

Required Materials Agenda Notebook Two-pocket folder or binder Loose-leaf paper Black or blue pens Red or green pens for peer editing Flash drive Appropriate texts

Required Materials cont. Be prepared! You will get ONE pass each quarter to leave the class. Once you use it, you may not leave class again during the semester. If you don’t use it, you will earn 5 extra credit points for the quarter. Maintain a neat and orderly notebook and folder/binder.

Classroom Policy and Procedures RESPECT- remember that we are all human beings and we all make mistakes Three tardies will result in a detention. ABSOLUTELY NO CELL PHONES!!! Come prepared and ready for action. Work well with others- pull your own weight! Speak with me about any problems related to class either before school or by appointment. Have fun and be positive!!

Late Work Policy Saint Viator High School English Department Late Work Policy The English department’s late work policy is as follows: If you are in the building on the day an assignment is due, you must turn it in to your teacher by the start of class, regardless of whether you attend class or not. Late work will be scored according to the following scale: Up to 1 day late: 25% deduction 2 days late: 50% deduction More than 2 days late: no credit

Late Work If you turn in late work, you must staple a Late Homework Sheet onto your paper and put it in your class period’s file. I will not accept late work that is placed on my desk. It must either be submitted to me personally when I collect it or placed in the folder with a Late Homework Sheet.

Bad Excuses My computer/printer broke = My dog ate my homework

Technical problems? Email your work to me- ensure that I received it BEFORE SCHOOL Save it on your flash/jump drive and print it from school Bring your flash/jump drive to me BEFORE SCHOOL Speak with me about any other technical problems BEFORE SCHOOL

You will submit all major papers through Turniitin.com You must also give me a hard copy of your paper

Evaluation/grades Be prepared for pop quizzes or tests Semester grades are a combination of each quarter grade (40%) and a cumulative semester exam (20%). I rarely give extra credit, and I NEVER give it to individual students.

Attendance/Absence Attendance is vital due to a large amount of in-class activities and discussion If you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to find out what you missed and get notes from a fellow student. It is YOUR responsibility to come see me before school to discuss what you missed and/or make arrangements for make-up tests. Failure to promptly make arrangements with me for make-ups will result in a zero. Pick up assignments in folder on bulletin board. I will dump the folders every two weeks.

Free Periods Before school- I arrive at 7:30 in room 232 Period 2- by appointment Period 6- by appointment Period 8- Writing Lab (located in the Resource Center) After school- by appointment *Please feel free to talk with me about any issues related to class. I’m a nice, approachable person- I promise!

Participation -40 points each month You are expected to Be Prepared Be on time Show Respect Have your head up at all times- NO SLOUCHING! NO HEADS ON DESKS! Participate in whole class discussions Participate in small group work Stay on task
