The 8 Parts of Speech in review…

Nouns Concrete Abstract Common Proper Can you touch, feel, see, hear or smell it? Abstract If you can’t perceive it…it must be abstract. Common lots of them (they are common) Proper Named (look for a Capital)

Examples… Concrete Abstract Common Proper computer, car, movie, perfume, etc. Abstract Love, the environment, racism, religion, etc. Common Teacher, student, car, movie, etc. Proper Ms. Smith, Brittany, Canada, The Toronto Maple Leafs

Pronouns A pronoun can replace a noun or another pronoun. You use pronouns like "he," "which," "none," and "you" to make your sentences less cumbersome and less repetitive. Proper Noun? Pronoun? Tim Jake Chadd him his

Antecedent The noun or noun phrase that a pronoun refers to. Do we say this?????

Verbs Main Verb Helping Verb Main verbs have meaning on their own and are usually the key action. Can be physical action or mental action Helping Verb Have no meaning on their own but they are necessary for the grammatical structure of a sentence. They need to be there to help the main verb and the sentence make sense.

Examples… I saw an elephant. We are watching TV. He speaks English. Main Verbs He is watching TV. I have finished my homework Helping Verbs

Adjectives Adjectives are words that describe or modify another person or thing in the sentence. Example: the huge, wet, dripping Bengal tiger Articles The limiting word before an adjective or noun. Example: a house, the street, an apple

Adverb An adverb can modify a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. An adverb answers questions such as "how?" "when?" "where?“ and “to what extent?"

What is the most misused Adverb? WELL It is an adverb, which describes HOW something is done. Shelley rides really well. (Describes how she rides.) GOOD Is an adjective, which describes a NOUN (person, place, thing, idea, or concept).

Conjunctive Adverb Conjunctive adverbs are adverbs that act as a transition between complete ideas. Example: The police officer directed traffic; however, the driver of the red sports car ignored him and sped through the intersection.

Conjunction Word that links two or more words or groups of words. Example: I ate pizza and pasta. Call the movers when you are ready.

Coordinating conjunction F = for A = and N = nor B = but O = or Y = yet S = so

Subordinating conjunction A conjunction that begins a subordinate clause This conjunction is always followed by a subject and a predicate

Common Subordinating Conjunctions

Preposition A preposition links nouns, pronouns and phrases to other words in a sentence. The word or phrase that the preposition introduces is called the object of the preposition.

Prepositional phrase a prepositional phrase will begin with a preposition and end with a noun or pronoun, the "object" of the preposition.
