3. What is a Pronoun?

The most common pronouns are: I, me, we, us, you, she, her, they, them, he, him, it
The word the pronoun replaces is called the antecedent.
Example: John did not want to ride the bus. He wanted to walk.
The pronoun He replaces the antecedent John
Other words that can be pronouns:
This, That, These, Those, Myself. Yourself. Ourselves, himself, Herself, Themselves,
When used in a question, these words are also pronouns:
What, which, who, whom, and whose

5. What is an adjective? a describing, or modifying, word
Describes a noun
Tells us: what kind, which one, how many, or how much
Example: I like the blue shirt.
The adjective is blue because it tells us what kind of shirt

7. A verb is the action of the sentence
To locate the verb, ask yourself, “What is being done in the sentence?”
Example: We ran twenty miles.
“Ran” is the verb because it tells us the action being done
A verb phrase has a main verb and one or more helping verbs
Common Helping Verbs:
Be: am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been
Have: has, have, having, had
Do: do, does, doing, did
Others: may, might, must, can, shall, will, could, should, would

8. What is an Adverb?
describes, or modifies, a verb, an adjective, or another adverb
They tell us how, when, where, to what extent (how much or how long)
Example: Joe played magnificently.
“Magnificently” is the adverb because it describes how Joe (subject) played (verb).
Adverbs usually end in an “ly,” but not always
Example: yesterday, earlier, rather

9. What is a preposition?
A word that shows the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word or part of a sentence
The word being connected to the pronoun or noun is called the object
Example: The playful puppy ran beside me.
“Beside” is the preposition. It connects puppy (the noun) to me (the object).

10. What is a Conjunction? Joins words, phrases, or clauses
Think of them as gluing words because they hold the words, phrases, or clauses together
Common conjunctions : and, for, or, yet, but, nor, so

11. What is an interjection?
A word that shows emotion and is not grammatically connected to the sentence
Examples of interjection: ah, hey, ouch, oops
Examples:
Ouch! That hurts.
Well, you should apologize.
