2 Noun Function: person, place, thing, or idea Example words: pen, dog, work, music, town, London, teacher, John Example sentence: This is my dog. He lives in my house. We live in Tulsa.

3 Verb Function: action or state Example words: (to) be, have, do, like, work, sing, can, must Example sentence: Facebook is a web site. I like Facebook.

4 Adjective Function: describes a noun Example words: a/an, the, 2, some, good, big, red, well, interesting Example sentence: I have two dogs. My dogs are big. I like big dogs.

5 Adverb Function: describes a verb, adjective or adverb Example words: quickly, silently, well, badly, very, really Example sentence: My dog eats quickly. When he is very hungry, he eats really quickly.

6 Pronoun Function: replaces a noun Example words: I, you, he, she, some Example sentence: Tara is Indian. She is beautiful.

7 Preposition Function: links a noun to another word Example words: to, at, after, on, but Example sentence: We went to school on Monday.

8 Conjunctions Function: joins clauses or sentences or words Example words: and, but, when Example sentence: I like dogs and I like cats. I like cats and dogs. I like dogs but I don't like cats.

9 Coordinating Conjunctions
These are known as the FANBOYS F-For A-And N-Nor B-But O-Or Y-Yet S-So

10 Subordinating Conjunctions
These will introduce a dependent clause. Since If Although Because Even though When Whenever While Etc

11 Interjections Function: short exclamation, sometimes inserted into a sentence Example words: oh!, ouch!, hi!, well Example sentence: Ouch! That hurts! Hi! How are you? Well, I don't know.
