NATO North Atlantic Treaty Organization Formed in 1949 10 Western European Nations + the US and Canada joined These nations pledged to fight any country who attacked a NATO member The countries who joined did so because they were alarmed by the Soviets

Warsaw Pact Formed in 1955 Created in response to NATO Soviets saw NATO as a threat 8 Eastern European nations joined Also a military alliance like NATO- would attack any nation who attacked a Warsaw Pact country

There was also…SEATO Southeast Asia Treaty Organization Formed in 1955 The US organized this alliance out of concern over communism spreading in Asia
