2 The United Nations 1945-50 nations create the United Nations (UN).
Now there are 193. Goal is to solve global problems and national disputes. There is a Security Council that is the “muscle” behind the UN. Five permanent members: France, Britain, China, United States, and Soviet Union Can you envision a problem the organization?

3 Germany-A Country Divided
The Yalta Agreement-Germany and Berlin were to be split into four occupation zones. One zone for France, Britain, U.S. and Soviets each East and West Germany, East and West Berlin

4 The Alliance Crumbles After WWII, only US and Soviet Union are the only countries left strong enough to be a Superpower nations more powerful than other powerful nations. Alliance between Soviet Union and Western democracies falls apart. Stalin and the Soviets want to spread Communism and create a “buffer zone” of friendly nations controlled by him to protect against further attack.

5 The Truman Doctrine U.S. president Truman-”It must be the policy of the US to support free people resisting attempted subjugation.” Containment- Keep Communism from spreading or, contained in countries where it already was.

6 The Marshall Plan WWII destroyed much of Europe.
Hunger and poverty drove many people to communism. To fight this, the U.S. gives millions dollars and millions of lbs. of food to Western Euro. nations.

7 Berlin Airlift Stalin angry that U.S. is helping West Germany get back on its feet. Blockades all ports and trains into Berlin-No Western food is getting in. U.S. flies food into airports. 2.3 million tons of food, coal, and other supplies.

8 BFFs NATO Warsaw Pact North Atlantic Treaty Organization
U.S., Canada, France, UK (Britain) plus others. Members pledged to defend each other if attacked. Warsaw Pact Soviet Union plus their “satellite states,” Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary. Satellite State- A country that is formally independent but heavily reliant on another country Soviet military alliance to answer NATO.
