Iron Curtain-A political barrier that isolated the people’s of Eastern Europe after World War 2, restricting their ability to travel outside the region. Stalemate-Deadlock; situation in which neither side wins. Airlift-Emergency shipment of supplies sent via airplane. Demilitarized Zone-Area from which military forces are prohibited. Superpower-Country with the military, political and economic strength to influence events worldwide. Arms Race-Contest in which nations compete to build more and more powerful weapons. Containment-Policy of limiting the expression or influence of a hostile power; America’s method to limit Soviet expansion during the Cold War.

2 NATO-The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, a defense alliance formed in 1949 with the countries of Western Europe, Canada and the United States agreeing to defend one another if attacked. Warsaw Pact-A treaty signed in 1955 that established an alliance among the Soviet Union, Albania, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, Poland and Romania. Cold War-After World War 2 a period of political noncooperation between the members of NATO and the Warsaw Pact nations, during which these countries refused to trade or cooperate with each other.
