USSR: Keep Germany weak and divided. Eastern Europe controlled by USSR Satellite States: Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria. U.S.: Stronger, united Germany and independent nations in Eastern Europe Truman felt USSR was planning world domination at Potsdam.

4 Iron Curtain Coined by Winston Churchill.
Border between USSR and Soviet satellite states. Served as buffer zone and USSR had total control.

5 Truman Faces a Crisis Countries in Europe were being threatened by Communism. Greece and Turkey

6 Truman Doctrine March 12, 1947. Truman wants money to help countries that are fighting communism. U.S. will aid countries fighting against communist takeovers ($400 mil to Greece and Turkey).

7 Containing Soviet Expansion
U.S. wants to keep communism within its existing borders. Marshall Plan (1948): Money given to countries in Western Europe to help with famine, economy, etc.

8 Allied Occupation of Germany and Berlin

9 Berlin Airlift USSR closed off highways leading into West Berlin (East Germany). Stalin hoped to make city fall to communists. U.S. began to airlift supplies into the city.

10 Cold War Alliances NATO: North Atlantic Treaty Organization: Military alliance to counter Soviet expansion. U.S., France, Great Britain, West Germany… Warsaw Pact: Military alliance between communist controlled countries in Eastern Europe. Soviet Union, Poland, Czechoslovakia…
