Welcome to Our Headquarters Mrs. Terry ~ Journalism Open House

About Your Teacher 11th year teaching 4rd year at JCLP; previously taught at Twin Lakes Academy I’ve taught: ELA (all grade levels), Creative Writing, Research & Writing, Journalism, Advanced Reading, Critical Thinking, Extreme Sports I love coaching! I’ve coached: Volleyball, Basketball, Track & Field (played these sports in school, but focused on volleyball and played in college) I LOVE THAT I GET TO TEACH JOURNALISM!! As I’m sure you are aware, there are lot of injustices and wrong-doing in the world, and journalism can help us uncover the truth and lead to change. Also, who doesn’t love reading the travel sections or the movie reviews?!

Behavior Expectations Follow all school and district rules No horse playing, running, etc. No bullying disrespectful behavior Stay focused during class No talking when teacher is talking Cooperate with groups Do not talk to others outside your group when working

Grading Expectations If a student does not submit their assignment on the due date, a zero is entered with an explanation Absences – if a student is absent on the due date, it is due the next class; if they are absent when the activity is assigned, they do get extra time Late Work Policy (*if students have earned a homework pass, they may use it to receive 1 extra day without penalty) 6th grade: 1Q=3 days, 2Q=2 days, 3Q=1 day, 4Q=0 days 7th grade: 1Q=1 day, 2Q=1 day, 3Q=0 days, 4Q=0 days 8th grade: 1Q=1 day, 2Q=0 days, 3Q=0 days, 4Q=0 days

Class Blog www.terrysteaching.wordpress.com You can also access class blog through FOCUS Main page includes any important class announcements Other links include: extra credit, class rules, syllabus Click on either Journalism 1 or 2, depending on class for weekly assignments Includes electronic copies of notes, rubrics, activities, etc. Includes due dates for each week

Class Dojo A Behavior tracking and Class Site that allows you to follow how your student is doing in class and see what projects we are working on Parents receive their own log on instructions to set up their account, allowing them to go online or use the app to check in with their student. There is also a class story feature that allows me to share what we are doing in class There is also a messaging feature that allows you to send messages to me (however, it’s still the same 48 hour turn around policy, and perhaps even longer as this is done via my personal phone)

Journalism Curriculum What we will be covering History of journalism Article formatting (5w and H; inverted pyramid, etc.) Different types of articles Components of a news paper Bias and Censorship Photography Basics News reporting Angles Video and Photography Basics Podcasts and Videocasts

Journalism Technology What we have Exceptions I make to help students We do have laptops Several do not work  All of them are missing keys  They are very slow  The batteries die quickly  Students may bring in their own laptops/tablets to complete work Students are responsible for their own devices and must ensure they keep up with it at all times. Must use for school work only. Students may use their cell phone for research Students sign an agreement that they understand they should use phone for school work only, no communications, games, etc.

Journalism Goals (starting 2nd quarter) Create a school news paper (Journalism 2) Printed by a local or online printer Printed monthly Sold to students and parents Create a school news blog (Journalism 1 and Journalism 2) Public internet web blog where we can add stories Updated monthly Create a school video news cast (not specific to grade level) Public internet web blog where we can add video reports Updated twice a month

How You Can Help As we move toward creating our own news room, there are several things that would help up create our work Any digital cameras and/or video cameras (USB capable to use with out laptops and to try to add microphones) Any microphones that can be plugged in to digital cameras and/or video cameras Any software suggestions for easily creating and editing video (needs to be free unless you want to purchase for the school ☺) –email to Mrs. Terry You can check out our Amazon wishlist at https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/MV5ZYFFX0KTD or search JLCP JOURNALISM
