A Church Divided and The Hundred Years’ War

A Church Divided

POPE BONIFACE VII 1300 Pope Boniface VIII attempts to enforce papal authority over the king Creates official document. “My master’s sword is made of steel, the pope’s made of words” Pope would never again be able to force monarch to obey him.

The French Pope and Avignon 1305 Philip IV Persuades the Cardinals to elect a new French Pope Clement V the newly elected Pope moves to Avignon, Popes would live there for another 69 years.

The Church Begins to Weaken The move to Avignon really weakened the Church but what was done to move the pope back weakened the Church even more!!!!!!

Pope Gregory XI Dies Pope Gregory dies in Rome so the Cardinals decide to deliberate in Rome while in Rome mobs began shouting for them to elect a Roman or even an Italian. So they chose an Italian, Pope Urban VI.

And then there were two Urban VI was not well liked, his arrogant personality did not help. A few months later a second Pope is elected. They Choose Clement VII

Can you guess what the Popes tried to do to each other?

THE GREAT SCHISM If you guessed they would excommunicate each other than you win a prize!!!!!

Home is where the heart is! Pope Clement VII stayed in Avignon. Pope Urban VI stayed in Rome.

1417 An End To The Madness Eventually a third Pope comes on the scene, he was elected by an earlier council at Pisa. The Council of Constance decides to put an end to this and choose a single Pope. ALL THREE POPES ARE FIRED

Martin V The council chooses Martin V to be the new pope ending the Great Schism, but not with out it greatly weakening the papacy first.

Scholars take a jab at Church authority John Wycliffe an Englishman preached that Jesus Christ not the Pope was the true head of the Church. Did not like how wealthy the clergy where he felt they should won no land or wealth. He also taught that the Bible alone was the authority on Christian life not the Pope. Helped spread his idea by inspiring an English translation of the Bible.

The Hundred Years’ War The French and English will battle over French soil for just over a century. When the last French King died without a successor. English King Edward III who was grand son of French King Philip IV claimed right to the French throne. The throne went to King Philip VI. Between 1421 and 1453 the French rallied and drove the English out of France entirely except for the port city of Calais

Changes in Warfare The English introduced major changes in warfare by introducing the longbow. Three Major battles Crecy, Poitiers,Agincourt Crecy: Out numbered by an army three times their size. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPH4D0gGgrA

The Impact of The Hundred Years’ War Finally in 1453 The Hundred Years’ War Ends. Each side experienced major changes. Feeling of Nationalism: People now fought for their King a national leader rather than for a feudal lord. French power and prestige increase. English suffer inner turmoil (War of the Roses).
