3 French Popes During the 1300’s we begin to see monarchs gain more power Catholic Church must support the monarchs policies 1305, the French King used his power to get Pope Clement V elected as pope 1307, Clement moved the center of the church to Avignon, France French King was seen in control

4 Catholic Church Powers Great Schism (split of the Catholic Church) In 1378, both Rome and Avignon elect two different popes Pope Urban VI (France) and Pope Clement VII (Rome) Both popes demanded obedience or excommunicated Created confusion in the church and doubt

5 Healing the Church To end the schism, the Holy Roman Emperor in 1414 summoned a conference to end the schism Reform the church Church officials removed the French Pope and persuaded the Roman Pope to resign Pope Martin V would be elected as the new pope
