Presentation transcript:

-What options are available post-SWCHS -What options are available post-SWCHS? - What support will my son/daughter receive? - What part can I play in supporting my son/daughter?

What options are available post-SWCHS? Employment Higher Apprenticeships (1-5 years, college, university or training provider alongside employer) Degree Apprenticeships (3-6 years, college or university alongside employer) Undergraduate Degree

What support will my son/daughter receive moving forwards? 13th June: Research guidance for UCAS and apprenticeships 18th June: University Finance guidance from Leeds University 20th June: UCAS Convention. Newmarket 21st June: Progression planning day – UCAS (KCL), Form the Future CV building for employment 11th July (period 5): Guidance on completing the UCAS form 18th July: Study skills session at UEA (for all students) 19th July: Final input on research and practical tips. What support will my son/daughter receive next academic year with their applications? The Reference: is written by subject teachers at the end of year 12 and is compiled by the form tutor. Students can read their reference and have an input before submission. New Form Tutor: will send the UCAS/employment application form with the student present. Students will also receive individual tutorials to help them finalise their applications. Drop-in clinics, careers appointments and tutorials are available for students who would like further support and advice. Jobs and university bulletin is updated every week for students. Assistant Heads of Sixth Form support: UCAS: Mr Fowler Employment: Miss Gilbert

Some Key Dates 16th August 2018: A Level Results Day – we strongly recommend you are there. AS results 10.00am. 15th October 2018: UCAS deadline for Early Applicants; applications should be completed Friday 28th September to ensure meeting this. October Half Term: SWCHS deadline for completed applications for all other applicants. 15th January 2019: UCAS deadline for all applicants Apprenticeships can be advertised at any time, very competitive companies advertise in the Autumn term. Students should check advertisements weekly. The bulk of jobs and apprenticeships are advertised in the Spring term. Each job requires a bespoke application. Students can apply for both university and employment. This is advisable if they are unsure.

How important are AS results? Students do need to disclose all qualifications on applications Universities/Employers all have individual policies on using AS data, however most now say that they do not use AS qualifications to make final decisions However, where AS results are positive, it is hard evidence to prove that the forecast grade is achievable and realistic – Over 140 students achieved at least 4 or 5 offers this year for university If there is underachievement in AS performance, we can contextualise this in the reference. Students will discuss their UCAS/target grade with teachers in September. The AS data will be one piece of evidence used alongside prior attainment in year 12 . You will also be notified of this grade to help students make final decisions with their applications. The AS data is still a good indicator of progress overall.

Where are the current Year 13s going after SWCHS? Universities: 4 Oxbridge 2 Medics 111 Russell Group 237 applications sent Employment Applications: JP Morgan Transport for London NHS Weston Homes Marines Union Bank of Switzerland

What part can you play as a parent? Check out and sign up to the UCAS parent page Help with the research Do not write the personal statement/application form Open Days or Recruitment Days (no more than 3 please) Be flexible, listen, accept their choices. They still need your support!
