2 Careers Information, Advice and Guidance at Sirius Academy: All students will be offered individual guidance interviews in Year 11 You will have input in tutor time and assemblies that focus on your post 16 choices Group work sessions will take place throughout the year to help you make your choices

3 Careers Information, Advice and Guidance at Sirius Academy: Sirius Academy has a Careers Adviser available to see students on a Tuesday and Thursday. You can ask for an appointment to see Ms Milner- you can call into the office- 317 or you can arrange it through a teacher. Your Careers Adviser will discuss your options with you and help you progress into the 6th Form, to College, onto an Apprenticeship or into Employment.

4 Think carefully about the choices you have… Bad reasons for choosing subjects/ courses Your friends are doing it You like the teacher You think its better to stick with what you know You think a subject is ‘girls’ or ‘boys’

5 Good reasons for choosing subjects/ courses It is directly linked to what you want to do in the future. It is a good facilitating subject It genuinely interests you

6 Where to get advice: Careers Adviser Subject teachers Careers teachers Information provided by schools/ colleges Parents and friends Careers information and resources in the library

7 Choices after leaving school: College Academic or vocational courses Apprenticeships and work-based learning Employment (without training)

8 Choices after leaving school Further Education Lots of different courses available at lots of different places! Can stay on at the Sixth Form or go on to College Courses can be academic or vocational Look at the qualification table on the careers page to see if this is for you

9 Choices after leaving school Apprenticeships and work-based learning Learning in the workplace and usually going to a college or training provider one day a week or fortnight. Lots of vocational areas are covered. Usually employed so get the same benefits as an employee and receive a minimum wage of £2.50 an hour (rising to £2.60 an hour from October 2011). Look at good and bad points… talk it through with someone

10 Choices after leaving school Employment You may want to go straight into a job when you leave school. When you are 16- 18, the national minimum wage is currently £3.64 an hour (rising to £3.68 from October 2011). You need to look at the good and bad points- is this really for you? Talk it over…

11 Choices after leaving school Doing Nothing! Won’t get any money!!! Will get bored!!! Doesn’t look good on your CV!!!

12 Choices after leaving school Remember…. Its your choice!!! For the first time, you choose where to go and what to study. Think about all the options available to you.
