English Language Arts Class Rules Course Description Mrs. Boyett’s Class Washington Middle School 2016-2017 School Year English Language Arts “Literature is no one’s private ground, literature is common ground; let us trespass freely and fearlessly and find our own way for ourselves.” - Virginia Woolf Class Rules 1. Follow directions quickly.   2. Raise your hand for permission to speak. 3. Raise your hand leave your seat. 4. Make smart choices. 5. Keep your dear teacher HAPPY.  Class Expectations Be in seat when tardy bell rings. Put proper heading on all papers. Do not use electronic devices in class. Use restroom during restroom breaks. Maintain a clean and orderly work area. Bring all of your supplies to class daily. Complete all of your work and turn it in on time. All WMS rules and policies shall be observed within the classroom. Course Description Welcome to 8th Grade English Language Arts! Our focus this school year will be learning and developing our skills as critical thinkers, readers, writers, speakers, and listeners. The development and mastery of these important literary skills not only is important to achieving success in the English Language Arts classroom, it is a critical component of achieving success in other school subjects, building strong relationships with others, and attaining a flourishing career as an adult. Basically, the quality of life you experience now thorough adulthood will depend a lot on how well you read, write, and communicate with others. What do I get if I follow class rules? Your appropriate behavior in class assures everyone of an environment conducive to learning. Some possible rewards for continuous appropriate behavior are: intrinsic value (satisfaction of learning), improved skills, verbal praise, positive note to parents, tangible trinkets, and special class activities / privileges. What are the consequences if I don’t follow class rules? 1. Warning: the teacher provides a verbal reprimand/reminder to student. 2. Lunch Detention: short time spent during lunch to contemplate conduct. 3. Recess Detention: short time spent during recess to contemplate conduct. Parent will be contacted. 4. Referral to Administration: the student will be immediately referred to administration for severe behavior problems. Where do I go to find agendas and assignments? mrsboyett@weebly.com is our class website. This site will house the weekly agendas, assignment due dates, PDF copies of class handouts, important announcements, and more. What happens if I turn in an assignment late? Work not completed and turned in by the assigned date is considered late. If a student is absent on the date work is due, the assignment is due the first day the student returns to school. COMPLETED LATE WORK will only receive partial credit (70% of the assignment total). Grade Scale Grade Breakdown Supplies Mrs. Boyett’s Class Washington Middle School 2016-2017 School Year How will I check my grade in class?   Grade Scale Class progress reports will be sent home in paper form every four-and-a-half weeks. Parents and students are also strongly encouraged to check the Parent Portal on a weekly basis to view the most current grades for EVERY class. A = 90% - 100% B = 80% - 89% C = 70% - 79% F = 0% - 69% What do I do if I am absent? Always check the class website for agendas, handouts, and assignment due dates. A student has two extra days to turn in any work assigned on a day a student was absent. If a quiz was administered on a day a student was absent, the quiz must be made up on the first day the student returns. If previously assigned work was due on the day of the absence, the work is due on the first day the student returns otherwise it is considered late and will only receive 70% credit. Do I have to read outside of class? All students will be expected to read independently on a daily basis. Students must bring a reading book to school so they are prepared for independent reading during English Language Arts. *Independent Reading will be assessed using the Accelerated Reader assessment program. Their quiz average and goal percentage will be combined to equal 1 test grade per 9 weeks.* Grade Breakdown Assessments / Quizzes = 30% (vocabulary, reading comprehension, independent reading, weekly WOW quiz) Grammar = 20% (practice activities, INB check, weekly warm-up) Writing = 30% (Weekly writing & process papers completed throughout the year) Benchmarks = 10% (quarterly district tests & writing) Comp. Lab Participation=10% (MobyMax) What types of writing will I do this year? Weekly Journals refers to the daily creative writing students will complete on their own time.. The Weekly Journal Topics and Due Dates will be given out at the beginning of each 9 weeks and posted on the website. Process Pieces refer to essays that students will complete. Numerous process pieces will be completed throughout the year (at least one per quarter), including Informational, Argument, and Narrative Writings. Students will also spend time writing poetry, folktales, and extended and constructed responses. What is an Interactive Student Notebook? The Interactive Student Notebook (ISN) is a portfolio of student work. The notebook will house all of the grammar notes and practice activities that the students have completed throughout the year. This will serve as a reference source when preparing for the Milestones Assessment. A spiral notebook will be required for this portion of the class.
