1 Physical Science What will I learn this year? Class Rules
Ms. Walsh’s Class Belair K-8 STEM School Physical Science “The important thing is to never stop questioning.” - Albert Einstein Class Rules Self-Control On-task & On-time Acceptance Respect Class Expectations Be in seat when tardy bell rings. Put proper heading on all papers. 3. Do not use electronic devices in class without teacher permission. 4. Bring all of your supplies to class daily. 5. Complete all of your work and turn it in on time. 6. Follow all school and RCBOE rules and policies About the Teacher I have taught students for 18 years. 16 of those years have been with middle school students. I have taught 6-8 all subjects, but science is my favorite. Science is truth. It can be proven. I try to conduct my classroom as if I were a student in my classroom. Learning is supposed to be hard work but my goal is to keep it fun and to treat my students with respect. Your success is my success, and I expect each one of my students to leave Belair with a Physical Science High School credit. I have three college degrees. My Bachelor’s Degree is from Austin Peay State University, my Master’s Degree is from Baker University, and my Specialist Degree is from Lincoln Memorial University. My family includes three children and a cat: Ally (20), Sarah (16)- newly licensed and the cause of many grey hairs, and Brendan (11), and Toby (1) – an orange Tabby cat. What will I learn this year? Physical Science is offered as a high school credit in middle school provided the student passes the EOCT.  Physical Science consists of 7 units:  Atomic Structure and Periodic Table, Properties of Matter, Chemical Bonds and Reactions, Force and Motion, Energy, Nature and Property of Waves, and Project Learning How do I contact my teacher? The best way to contact the teacher will be through or the Classdojo App. What do I get if I follow class rules? Your appropriate behavior in class assures everyone of an environment conducive to learning. Some possible rewards for continuous appropriate behavior are: intrinsic value (satisfaction of learning), improved skills, verbal praise, and passes. Students earn a pass every time they reach a multiple of 10 points in Class DOJO. Teacher will check Class Dojo periodically as time permits. What happens if I don’t follow class and school rules? 1. Warning: the teacher provides a verbal reprimand/reminder to student. 2. Lunch Detention: short time spent during lunch to contemplate conduct. 3. Parent Contact 4. Teacher Detention 5. Referral to Administration: student will be immediately referred to administration for severe behavior problems. ClassDOJO ClassDOJO will be used to communicate behavior and assignments. Preferably both students and parents will set up a classdojo account. Passcodes will be handed to the student the first weeks of school. Any missed assignments will be expected to be made up in a timely manner. Postponing make-up work inhibits learning because learning is built on prior knowledge. Make up work can be found in the classroom on the back bulletin board. Also, assignments will be posted in Remind. How can I check my grade? Infinite Campus Parent Portal will be utilized to communicate student progress and will be updated on a regular basis. It is important for both parents and students to access IC regularly. Students checking their grades promotes ownership and responsibility in their academic success.

2 What is an Interactive Student Notebook?
Ms. Walsh”s Class Belair K-8 STEM School School Year What is an Interactive Student Notebook? . The Interactive Student Notebook (ISN) is a portfolio of student work. A composition book will be used for the ISN.. The majority of classwork, notes, study guides, AND vocabulary, will be completed in the ISN, so it is imperative that it be complete and up to date. It will also count as a classwork grade. This is a wonderful tool to use to prepare for the EOCT. Top Performing Students The two students in each class with the highest benchmark scores each nine weeks will be chosen to be class secretary. First nine weeks’ class secretary will be chosen by pretest scores. I will try to choose different secretaries each nine weeks. However, secretaries get their job because they are able to maintain the high expectations of this class. Secretaries will receive one pass a week when they have done their job and a large chocolate bar at the end of the nine weeks.. Secretary 1 will fill a “while you were out” sheet for all absent students, pass out interactive notebooks and necessary supplies. Secretary 2 will help with lab set up and clean up, run any needed errands, and pass out any papers in the outbox at the beginning of class. Grade Breakdown Assessments – 40% Classwork, notebook, station work-30% Labs- 30% Class Resources The science textbook is online and will be utilized for instruction in class and if possible at home.
