How Do I Become College Eligible?

Path to UC/CSU Admissions The Requirements Subject a-g Courses GPA Grades Examination SAT/ACT Personal Insight Questions Only for UC; not for CSU Now we’ll talk about UC AND CSU requirements! We will talk about the three requirements in depth. Only the UC application requires the UC Personal Insight Questions where you will have to answer four out of eight questions.

Subject a-g Requirements 15 courses History 2 years minimum English 4 years minimum Mathematics 3 years minimum 4 years Recommended Starting with Algebra UC only; seat time in Geometry Lab Science 2 years minimum Language other than English Visual/Performing Art 1 year required College Prep Electives Give students the FFWD How do I become eligible for college? handout for reference. For the Mathematics Requirement point out that as of 2015, Geometry cannot be skipped by taking a higher math class. The student must do the seat time in the course. It can be completed in middle school.

GPA Requirement “Grades” For UC eligibility, students must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA and competitive is at least a 3.6 GPA. For CSU eligibility, students must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA and competitive is at least a 3.0 GPA. Can earn extra points in Honor & AP Courses Calculated with grades in a-g courses from the summer after 9th grade until the summer after 11th grade These are only MINIMUM gpa requirements. Most of the UC campuses are competitive to get into and you will need higher than a 3.0. There are many CSU campuses that are competitive as well so the higher your gpa, the more likely you will get in to more colleges!

Examination Requirement 3 Hour Exams SAT or ACT UC requires: SAT with Essay ACT with Writing Required score can depend on: GPA College or major you are applying to PSAT is a practice exam It is important for students to take the PSAT their junior year in order to be considered for the National Merit Scholarship Encourage students to take the PSAT in the 10th grade for practice so that when they take it as Juniors, it won’t be there first time. Encourage students to take both the ACT and SAT at least twice, at the end of the 11th grade and the beginning of the 12th grade.

Questions???? Looking at the FFWD How do I become eligible? handout, what questions do you still have about what you need to do to prepare yourself for college? Do you have any thoughts about the difference between the state of California requirements vs. the UC/CSU requirements? Why is it important to know the minimum requirements to get into a California 4 year university? How will these requirements help you with your college goals? Here are some baseline questions to check for understanding and wrap up your conversation on college requirements.
