2   These courses are required in order to be on track to attend the University of California (UC) schools and the California State Universities (CSU).  Out of state schools and private schools usually follow similar course requirements.  A-G courses are like a Disneyland Admission Ticket; if you don’t have one you can’t enter the theme park.  In terms of college admission, if you don’t complete all of the A-G requirements you can’t get into a UC or CSU. A-G Courses

3   Area A: Social Science  2 years required  Ex. World History and US History  Area B: English  4 years required  Ex. Language Arts 9, 10, AP English Language, AP English Literature  Area C: Mathematics  3 years required  4 years recommended  Area D: Laboratory Science  2 years required  3 or more years recommended

4  A-G Courses  Area E: Language Other Than English  2 years required  3 or more years recommended  Area F: Visual and Performing Art  1 year required  Ex. Guitar, Drama, Art  Area G: College Prep Elective  1 year required  Ex. AP Psychology, Accounting

5   You MUST earn a C or better in your A-G courses.  If you earn a D or F, you will need to either retake the course during the school year or in summer school.  Don’t take the minimum required years for the A-G courses; stand out and take extra years of science, math, language other than English etc. Remember…

6   College Admission Profiles provide information pertaining to a specific admission year at a university.  Admission Profiles usually address the average admitted freshmen g.p.a, test scores, percentage of applications accepted, etc.  Let’s discuss the UC 2015 Freshmen Admission Profile… College Admission Profile

7   There are 9 UC campuses in California  The minimum g.p.a. required to for a student to be eligible to apply is a 3.0 (10 th + 11 th grade only)  These campuses are researched based.  All UC campuses have S.T.E.M. majors  Examples of Majors at the UCs:  Biology, Sociology, Communication, Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences University of California

8   There are 23 in California  The CSUs have majors that are more “hands on”  Ex. Forensic Science, Social Work, Criminal Justice  During your senior year at a CSU, you are required to complete an internship relating to your major and obtain hands on work experience.  The minimum g.p.a. required for a student to be eligible to apply is a 2.0 (10 th +11 th grade only)  However, if you have below a 3.0 (10 th +11 th grade) you must earn a certain SAT or ACT score in order for your application to be reviewed  Let’s look at your CSU Eligibility Index… California State Universities

9  UC vs. CSU Application Process UC Application  A-G courses  Grades  Test Scores: SAT, SAT Subject Tests, ACT, AP Exam  Extracurricular Activities, Community Service, Awards and Honors, Educational Preparation Programs  2 Personal Statements totaling 1,000 words CSU Application  A-G Courses  Grades  Test Scores: SAT, ACT

10   Students apply for both the UC and CSU college systems during the Fall of their senior year.  Both applications are due November 30 th.  Students are encouraged to apply to BOTH the UCs and CSUs. UC and CSU Application Process

11   Take challenging courses!  Honors, Advanced Placement (AP)  Community College Courses  These are FREE for current high school students.  Juniors and Seniors are encouraged to at least take 1 community college class.  Get good grades!  Earn as many As as you can.  The higher your g.p.a., the more likely you are to get into your dream college. 12   Get Involved!  Join clubs, play sports, volunteer in your community.  Learning how to balance your school work and extracurricular activities will pay off in the long run.  Talk to people who are in college or have graduated from college:  Talk to your teachers, counselors, family members, your doctor, your dentist, etc.  Ask them what college they went to and about their personal experiences/advice.  See Ms. Zavala for a College Advising Appointment in room 701 at least once a year. 13   Test Preparation for the SAT and ACT  You will need to take the SAT and ACT during 2 nd semester of 11 th grade and 1 st semester of 12 th grade.  These tests are FREE if you qualify for free or reduced lunch  Enroll in the FREE Kaplan SAT Test Prep courses offered after school at Glenn High School (during your junior or senior year).  Go to www.collegeboard.org to practice for the SAT.www.collegeboard.org  Go to www.actstudent.org to practice for the ACT.www.actstudent.org How Can I Prepare For College?

16   YES YOU CAN!  Remember: The LESS money your parents make, the MORE money the government will give you to help you pay for college. C an I Afford College?

17  Types of Financial Aid Available  Grants: free money that you are not required to pay back.  Scholarships: Students usually need to apply for this type of financial aid. Scholarships are also free money you do not need to pay back.  Work Study: A part time job (usually on campus). Students keep the wages they earn from working.  Federal Student Loans: Money that you borrow. You do not start repaying the loans until 6 months after you graduate.

18   In January of your senior year, your counselors will host workshops to help you complete your financial aid application and provide detailed information regarding financial aid.  You fill out an application at www.fafsa.ed.govwww.fafsa.ed.gov  If you are an undocumented student, you fill out an application at dream.csac.ca.gov  See Ms. Zavala personally if you are not sure which one you need to fill out.
