French Colonists Big in Fur Trade Fur Traders 80,000 settlers, interior North America ,west of Appalachian Mountains in Ohio River Valley Allied with the Huron and Algonquin tribes Big in Fur Trade Gave the Huron and Algonquin’s guns More than 1 million settlers on east coast, spreading inland over mountains – Ohio River Valley Allied with Iroquois tribe Fur Traders Gave the Iroquois guns

Where are they? France had Forts in the Ohio River Valley. They began to take prisoners of any English they found there to keep them from settling. The Colonists felt pinned in by France on the East side of the Mountains.

Whose Land Is It? France had explored up the rivers from New Orleans and found Ohio Valley. Native Americans have lived here for hundreds of years. The Colonists came in from the east and found it after crossing the mountains.

Benjamin Franklin proposes to create a Grand Council to unite the colonies (for the first time) He insists that they can not defeat the French otherwise. This council could: Collect Taxes Raise Armies Make Treaties Start New Settlements It did not pass in all the colonies’ legislatures Albany Plan of Union Do you think the English King would be ok with this? Why or Why Not?

Albany Plan of Union Sketch by Benjamin Franklin that was published in news papers.

War is hard! Sometimes you get lucky! English soldiers were not used to fighting natives guerilla warfare – using the land to ambush, fight, and hide from enemies. The English wore the French down! And started to fight like the natives!

George Washington Was born in the colonies! Mayor from Virginia Led a group of men into the Ohio River Valley – they are defeated – start of the war. Went on 3 campaigns and was not successful Stayed at home during the rest of French & Indian War.

Treaty of Paris 1763, English Won! England claimed all of North America east of the Mississippi River France had given Spain the land west of the Mississippi River for their help (that never came). England traded Cuba and Philippines for Florida territory

Proclamation Line of 1763 Native Americans are not happy with new settlements on “their land” and continue to fight the colonists The King tells the colonists that they can not settle west of the mountains. The Natives are happy with that!

Proclamation Line of 1763 The Colonists are still pinned on the east coast! What about those colonists who have settled in Ohio River Valley? Didn’t they fight the war to get the Ohio River Valley?
