1 French and Indian War

2 Rivals in America England and France had been rivals for land, money, and power for years France controlled Canada, the Ohio River Valley, and the Great Lakes England controlled the land along the Atlantic Ocean France wanted to keep England away from their fur trade

3 Native Americans Both the French and English wanted Native American allies. Native Americans usually sided with the French because France wanted furs and NOT land The most powerful group of Natives were the Iroquois Confederacy which included 5 nations who acted together in times of trouble

4 War Begins The French began building forts close to the British colonies The British sent a young George Washington to demand the French to leave the Ohio River Valley Washington became known as a hero throughout the 13 colonies for fighting in the first battle

5 Britain Declares War on France
Fighting in America helped start a new war in Europe known as the Seven Years’ War between Britain and France. New France falls in 1756 under the leadership of the British Prime Minister William Pitt. With Pitt’s great leadership, he also runs up a large amount of debt which later raises colonist taxes The Treaty of Paris of 1763 officially ends the war

6 Treaty of Paris 1763 The Treaty of Paris marked the end of power for France in North America France was permitted to keep some of its sugar producing islands, but was forced to five Canada and most of its lands east of the Miss. River to Great Britain. Spain gave Florida to Great Britain Spain received French lands west of the Miss River- The LA Territory

7 Proclamation of 1763 After the war Chief Pontiac of the Ottawa nation wanted to get rid of the British colonist in their area and attacked a British fort at Detroit. In efforts to keep Indian raids down, King George III stated that there would be no more expansion past the Appalachian mountains This upset colonist
