UNIT 1: INTRODUCTION/ A HEALTHY FOUNDATION HEALTH SCIENCE MS. ALLISON SOMERS

THE HEALTH TRIANGLE There are 3 components that work together to create a healthy individual

1. Physical Health Means how well your body functions A person w/ good physical health will have enough energy to perform daily tasks Good physical health includes: Good nutrition - Getting enough sleep Good hygiene - Avoiding substances Being active

2. Mental/ Emotional Health Is: how you feel about yourself How well you meet demands of everyday life Your ability to process information Person with good mental/emotional health accepts responsibility for their actions and stands up for their beliefs and values Good mental/ emotional health includes: Ability to express feelings in an appropriate way Ability to deal with life’s frustrations Avoiding negative thoughts

3. Social Health Is the way you get along w/ others Good social health includes: Ability to make and keep friends Ability to work and play cooperatively Ability to communicate with others

INFLUENCES ON YOUR HEALTH Many things contribute to how healthy you are

1. Heredity Traits that have been passed on to you from your parents Certain genes may put you at risk for certain illnesses

2. Environment Physical environment: pollution, dust, smog, cig. Smoke Social environment: family, role models, peers Culture: Beliefs, customs & behaviors of a group

3. Attitude Affects the choices you make Those who see positives are healthier

4. Your Behavior Behavior: affects all 3 aspects of health You have total control over

5. Media Radio, television, newspapers, magazines, books, & Internet Advertisements

6. Technology Positive: Negative: Treatment for diseases, screenings & tests Negative: Replaces many physical activities people used to do
