2 WELLNESS The next few images will show examples of Healthy and Un-Healthy people. Take a good look at the images presented and think about them and how they could possibly impact your life. Take note of the characteristics of the people in the photos. List all of the things that you notice in photos, Good or Bad. Then apply your list to your own life style. How do you rate yourself? Healthy or Un-healthy or somewhere in between?

2. How do you see yourself? 3. How do you feel your friends see you? 4. To what extent would you go for the body you want? 5. What do you do to lose weight? Or gain weight? 6. How important is what you wear? ? hair? make-up? 7. What makes a person "well liked" ? "outer" body image or their "inner" body?

17 Ch. 1 Health and Wellness Health – Condition of physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being. Wellness – Having all four sides of Health Square balanced. Health Assessment- Set of questions used to evaluate each of the four parts of health.

19 Physical Health Get 8 hours of sleep a night
Eat a balanced and nutritious diet Get plenty of physical activity Practice good hygiene. - Hygiene: Practice of keeping clean. Avoid drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.

20 Emotional Health The way you recognize and deal with your feelings.
Suggestions to maintain your emotional Health: -Express your emotions in words rather than acting them out. - Accept your strengths and weaknesses, and RESPECT yourself. - Deal with sadness correctly and in a timely manner.

21 Mental Health Has to do with the mind. How you deal with life’s demands. Being mentally healthy means you can…. - Recognize and deal with stress in a positive way. - Accept new ideas. - Effectively solve problems.

22 Social Health How well you get along and interact with others.
Ways to improve your Social Health… - Being considerate of others - Show respect to others - Be dependable - Put yourself in their “shoes” - Ask for help when you need it!

Physical – Leading a life that is active and well nourished Emotional – Understanding your thoughts, behaviors, and feelings Mental- Has to do with the mind. How you deal with life’s demands. Social – Engaging in meaningful relationships with family, friends, and communities 4 More to Think About Intellectual – Increasing time spent developing skill sets and exploring new ideas Spiritual – Finding purpose in life through values and beliefs Environmental – Living in harmony with the Earth and natural resources Occupational – Obtaining a work-life balance

24 Influences on Health/Wellness
Heredity – The passing down of traits from a parent to a child. Trait: Characteristic of a person Environmental- Everything around you, including things we can NOT see. Relationships – Family, friends, ect. Peers: Someone who is the same age or same grade and who has similar interests. Culture – the collective beliefs, customs, and behaviors of a group. 26 Life Style Lifestyle: set of behaviors by which you live.
Attitude: The way you act, think, or feel that causes you to make one choice over another. Preventative Healthcare: Taking the steps needed to prevent illness or accidents.

Life Skills- skills that help you deal with situations that can affect your health. * Assessing your health * Making good decisions * Being a wise consumer * Communicating effectively * Setting Goals * Using refusal skills (ways to say NO) * Coping

“PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT” Evaluating your skills - Do I periodically evaluate my square? - Am I making good decisions? - Am I setting and meeting my goals? - Do I use refusal skills?

29 Staying Healthy and Well
Ticket Out the door: List four ways that life skills work together to improve your health. Using refusal skills, communicating effectively, making good decisions, assessing health square, evaluate media message, staying informed .

2. What does it mean to "put yourself at risk"? 3. If you see someone being bullied, what are some things you could do? 4. Whose responsibility is it to stop bullying from occurring? 5. In what type of situations might adult involvement help solve bullying situations? 6. In what type of situations might adult involvement hurt solving bullying situations? 7. What are some of the ways young people learn to socialize with each other? 8. How can we learn to better accept each other's difference
