2 Objectives: Standard 1 Objective 2c: Analyze how societal norms, cultural differences, personal beliefs, and media impact choices, behavior, and relationships

3 Personal Health Health – The combination of physical, mental/emotional, spiritual, and social well being. Wellness – An overall state of well-being and/or total health.

4 Health Continuum

5 Prevention: practicing health and safety habits to remain free from disease and injury. Health Literacy: a person’s capacity to learn about and understand basic health information and services and use these resources to promote his/her health and wellness.

6 Lifestyle Factors Lifestyle Factors– Behaviors related to the way a person lives. FACTORS THAT PROMOTE GOOD HEALTH 8 – 10 hrs. of sleep Eating three balanced meals Being physically active Maintaining healthy weight Avoiding drugs and alcohol Managing Stress Prevent Injuries

7 Health Triangle All sides of the triangle need to be equal and balanced! If they are not equal what happens to the shape?

8 Physical Health Physical Health – Energy to perform daily activities, deal with stress and daily challenges, resist disease, and avoid injury. Get adequate sleep -How many hours do you need? Eat nutritious meals -What are some of your favorite fruits and vegetables? Drink enough water -Do you feel thirsty often? Be physically active -How often do you get your heart rate up?

9 Mental/Emotional Health Mental/Emotional Health – How well you process information and your feelings about yourself. Express your feelings in appropriate ways Avoid negative thoughts Accept responsibility for your actions Stand up for your beliefs

10 Social Health Social Health – Ability to make and keep friends along with the ability to work cooperatively with others. Show respect for others Communicate properly and appropriately with others Proper hygiene and grooming habits

12 What other influences affect our Health?

13 Environment – The sum of your surroundings. Includes family, neighborhood, school, job, etc. Physical Environment – The safer you live the healthier you will be. Social Environment – Support group including family, friends, role models, etc. Peers – People of the same age who share similar interests.

14 Culture – Collective beliefs, customs, behaviors of a group. Your identity can come from your culture which can strongly influence your health.

15 More Health Influences… Attitude – The way you view situations. This will affect the choices you make resulting in good/bad health. Positive attitude = good health. Behavior – You control how you act. Positive actions = good health. (good diets, exercise, abstaining from risky behaviors) Media – Methods of communicating information. Internet, television, radio, movies, news papers, etc. All aimed to persuade you into thinking a certain way. (DOVE AD) Technology – Advances in medical screenings and treatment of disease helps people live longer, healthier lives.
