The Second Declension Masculine

Subject or Predicate noun Object of the Preposition Just like with the first declension the endings of the second declension help you understand what job the noun is doing in the sentence: Case Job Singular Translation Plural Nom Subject or Predicate noun -us The.. -i Gen Possessive Of the.. -orum Dat Indirect object -o To/for the.. -is Acc Direct object Object of the Preposition -um The… -os Abl By/with/from.. Remember that in Latin all nouns have a gender either masculine, feminine, or neuter. ALL NOUNS THAT END IN –US IN THEIR NOMINATIVE SINGULAR ARE MASCULINE!

ALL NOUNS THAT END IN –US IN THEIR NOMINATIVE SINGULAR ARE MASCULINE! Remember that in Latin all nouns have a gender either masculine, feminine, or neuter. ALL NOUNS THAT END IN –US IN THEIR NOMINATIVE SINGULAR ARE MASCULINE!

The noun in Latin is spelled differently if it is doing a different job. So when we are attempting to translate a Latin noun there is a multiple step procedure you will need to do to be able to correctly translate the word and eventually the sentence.

1. What does the noun mean?

2. What declension does the noun belong to?

3. What case is the noun and its job in the sentence?

4. What is the number of the noun?

5. What is the translation?

6. Does it make sense with the rest of the sentence?

Now lets look at how this would work as we translate a sentence togther.

Filii Dei servos amant.

1. Find the verb and translate it. Filii Dei servos amant.

Filii Dei servos amant. Amant = They love

2. Translate the first word in the sentence 2. Translate the first word in the sentence. Remember to use the 6 step process. Filii Dei servos amant.

Filii Dei servos amant. Fillii 1. meaning = son 2. declension = 2nd 3 Filii Dei servos amant. Fillii 1. meaning = son 2. declension = 2nd 3. & 4. case & number = a. Nom. Pl. = subject noun b. Gen. Sing. = possessive noun 5. translation = ?? Which do I choose

Remember step 6 Does it make sense. Fillii Dei servos amant Remember step 6 Does it make sense! Fillii Dei servos amant. Which makes sense? The sons of the son

That is right The sons Usually the first noun in a sentence will be the subject so it you ever have a question and it’s the first noun treat it like it is in the nominative case and is doing the job of the subject.

Now we do the same thing with the next two words in the sentence.

2. Translate the second word in the sentence 2. Translate the second word in the sentence. Remember to use the 6 step process. Filii Dei servos amant.

Filii Dei servos amant. Dei 1. meaning = God 2. declension = 2nd 3. & 4. case & number = a. Nom. Pl. = subject noun b. Gen. Sing. = possessive noun 5. translation = ?? Which do I choose

Remember step 6 Does it make sense. Fillii Dei servos amant Remember step 6 Does it make sense! Fillii Dei servos amant. Which makes sense? Put the other words you have already translated with this new word to help you. The sons the Gods love The sons of God love

That is right The sons of God love Genitive/ possessive nouns usually follow the noun the modify.

2. Translate the second word in the sentence 2. Translate the second word in the sentence. Remember to use the 6 step process. Filii Dei servos amant.

Filii Dei servos amant. servos 1. meaning = slave 2. declension = 2nd 3. & 4. case & number = a. Acc. Pl. = direct object (it is receiving the action of the verb, love) 5. translation = the slaves

Remember step 6 Does it make sense. Fillii Dei servos amant Remember step 6 Does it make sense! Fillii Dei servos amant. Which makes sense? Put the other words you have already translated with this new word to help you. The sons of God the slaves love.

That is right The sons of God the slaves love That is right The sons of God the slaves love. In Latin the verb comes last. So to translate this well in English we need to reorder some of the words.

Good work!!! The sons of God love the slaves.

Now try it with these sentences.
