 What’s a schism?  What were two events/disagreements that caused the “Great Schism” in 1054?  What were the religions that came out of the Great Schism?

 vWW2U vWW2U

 They began in 1096  Christians/Muslims battled for control of the Middle East  Great Schism happened 40 years earlier

 During the late 1050’s, the Seljuk Turks started chipping away at the Byzantine Empire.  The Seljuk Turks were Muslim and did 2 things  Taking territory for their own  Converting people to Islam

 The Turks prevented Christians from visiting Jerusalem.  So! Alexius I, Emperor of the Byzantine Empire, asked Pope Urban II for help.  He needed Christian Knights to combat the Turks  Why might that be an issue?????

 Urban II gives a speech to his guys in support of the Byzantine people.  He has alternate motives, though.  Wanted more power in Europe  Wanted to heal the schism that happened

 1 st crusade  Christians won Jerusalem and massacred Jews and Muslims in the city.  Crusades had an awkward Push/Pull effect  Eventually, The Crusaders divided into 4 Crusader States  Which made them easier to attack for Muslims

 Saladin and the Muslims (Seljuk Turks) took control of the holy land.  The Crusaders launched a 3 rd crusade. They failed.  However, Saladin opened Jerusalem for Christians to have pilgrimage.

 The Crusaders (Roman Catholics) had helped Roman/Italian merchants economically.  In order to get ahead of the Byzantine Empire (Constantinople– Eastern Orthodox), the Crusaders Attacked, Captured, and Looted Constantinople.

 While the Crusaders attacked their original partners, the Muslims were bored.  The Seljuks attacked the 4 Crusader states, and especially the city of Acre.  The Muslims captured the city and massacred Christians– similarly what the Christians did 200 years earlier.
