Susan Sterba Unit Portfolio Presentation

In this unit students become time travelers searching out the history behind the technology that they use in their everyday lives. Technology such as: Computers, iPods, Cell Phones and much more. They will learn about the creators of these technologies as well as the creation itself.

Essential Question:  How does knowing the past help us to understand today? Unit Questions:  Who created today’s technologies?  Why were the technologies we use to day created? Content Questions:  When was the first computer built?  Who are the creators of some of today’s technologies?  How was the first cell phone used?  Where do you see the future of Technology going?

I created this unit to show students:  How the technology of today was created.  How technology has evolved over the past 60 years  Where technology might be heading by studying it’s past. In this unit, I want my students to:  Be inspired by the creators of today’s technology.  Carry forth the ideas, passions and excitement of developing new technologies.  Be ready for tomorrow innovative technologies. The future

My students will develop 21 st Century Skills such as:  Understand how things are connected amongst each other.  Framing, analyzing and synthesizing information in order to solve problems and answer questions. 1  Sharing responsibility for group work.  Accessing information efficiently and effectively, evaluating information critically and competently and using information accurately and creatively for the issue or problem at hand. 2  Appropriate use of digital technology, communication tools to access, evaluate, and create information.  Use technology as a tool to research, evaluate and communicate information, and the possession of a fundamental understanding of the ethical/legal issues surrounding the access and use of information. 3  Work and collaborate productively with others in a group.  Use other’s strengths accomplish a common goal.  Behave responsibly with consideration of others in your group. 1, 2,& 3 of the above from: Partnership for 21st Century Skills

Assessment Purpose: To gain insight into what my students know about technology and its origins. What I hope to learn from it: I hope to learn what they already know so that I can make the unit as fun and informational as possible without being redundant or boring. Unit planning: Using the pre-unit assessment will help guide student’s learning through out the unit by giving me various avenues to explore and ideas to research. Feedback: Allowing student feedback on assessment will help gauge where student needs are. Take the Pre-Unit Assessment now!

I would love to hear any feedback to my unit: The History of Technology Give me ideas and feed back on:  What types of technologies are you curious about that a 3 rd grader might also be curious about?  Inventors of various technologies  What other types of higher level thinking can be added to this unit? What questions do you have about the unit that weren’t addressed? Just shoot me an at
