1 Purpose of Proof Writing
Unit Portfolio Presentation Christina Murray

2 Unit Summary Students will learn that they use many of the same skills in proof writing that they use to solve puzzles or play strategy games. Students will learn deductive structure and formal proof writing. Lastly, they will relate these skills to real world applications by finding examples of their uses in the real world, such as specific careers.

3 Curriculum-Framing Questions
Essential Question How will logical thinking help me in the real world? Unit Questions What is the purpose of learning proofs in Geometry? How does solving puzzles and playing games help me to solve proofs? What skills does proof writing develop? Content Questions What is the purpose of learning proofs in Geometry? How does solving puzzles and playing games help me to solve proofs?

4 Purpose of Proof Writing
This project will help my students develop 21st century skills by: Developing, implementing and communicating new ideas to others Exercising sound reasoning in understanding Making complex choices and decisions Understanding the interconnections among systems Framing, analyzing and synthesizing information in order to solve problems and answer questions Articulating thoughts and ideas clearly and effectively through speaking and writing

5 Gauging Student Needs Assessment
Purpose of the Assessment To gather information about what students already know and what they wonder about growing plants. What I want to learn from my students? I want to find out what they already know about the Unit Questions. How I have tried to promote higher-order thinking? I ask students to find relationships between the thinking they use in playing games/solving puzzles and proof writing. How the assessment information helps me and my students plan for upcoming activities in the unit? The assessment gives students an idea of what they are working toward. In knowing the intended learning outcomes, students are more likely to stay engaged and plan ahead. What feedback or additional ideas I’d like? Suggestions of games and activities that use deductive reasoning, examples of proofs students have seen in the past

6 My Goals for the Course Find ways to make proof writing more meaningful for my students Teach students the real life applications of proof writing

7 Goals for My Students To become better problem solvers by use of deductive reasoning To construct valid, logical arguments To become more effective communicators To appreciate the challenge of proof writing

8 Request for Feedback I would like help on my CFQ’s and assessment.
The students know very little about proofs and may have a difficult time filling out the KWL Help on how to integrate technology
