1 Fantastic Tales Unit Portfolio Presentation Karen Chandler

2 Unit Summary In this Fantastic Tales unit, students will compare and contrast folktales, legends, fables, legends, myths and family stories. Each student will… Interview your oldest family members and create a multimedia presentation of family stories to be presented to your class.

3 Curriculum-Framing Questions Essential Question How does the past influence the future? Unit Questions How do family stories influence your life? Why is it important for you to record family stories? How do family stories relate to folktales, legends, fables, and/or myths? How have family stories influenced history? Content Questions What are the characteristics of a fable? Legend? Myth? Folktale? What is a protagonist? Anatagonist? What is conflict? Resolution? What is a life lesson? What is a moral? Do all stories have a moral? Define at least 4 different types of family units.

4 Fantastic Tales Project This project will help my students develop 21 st century skills by: Collaborating with peers. Interviewing family members Creating and presenting a multimedia project about family stories Comparing and contrasting literature including several genres of tales

5 Gauging Student Needs Assessment Purpose of the Assessment To gather information about what students already know and what they wonder about types of tales. What I want to learn from my students? I want to find out what they already know about the Unit Questions. How I have tried to promote higher-order thinking? I ask students to find relationships and draw conclusions about tales and how they relate to each other and to history. How the assessment information helps me and my students plan for upcoming activities in the unit? The assessments let me know if the students are grasping the information that is being covered. Assessments let me know who needs help with a particular concept and which students need to be grouped together to work. What feedback or additional ideas Id like? I am open to any suggestions.
