W HAT IS MARIJUANA ? Dried leaves and flowers of the hemp plants, called cannabis sativa Commonly called pit or weed

E FFECTS Affects the brain of the person using the dug The main active chemical in marijuana is THC THC alters the way the brain processes sensory information Variety of reactions Pleasant sensation for short period Unpleasant reactions

S HORT TERM EFFECTS Reduces reaction time and coordination Impaired judgment Increase heart rate and appetite Anxiety Panic attacks Unable to think clearly

E CSTASY Club drug that affects the user in similar ways to hallucinogens and stimulants Stimulants speed up the central nervous system making a person feel very alert or hyper Scientific name for ecstasy is MDMA MDMA is a synthetic chemical created in illegal lab Mixed with caffeine or amphetamine

Taken as a pill, tablet or capsule Combined with alcohol= more dangerous Some feel energized, happy and relaxed Others feel nervous and agitated Effects start within 30 minutes Can last between 3 to 6 hours Other effects include: Increased heart rate Nausea Blood pressure Chills Sweating No appetite

D ATE RAPE DRUGS Rohypnol or roofies It suppresses the CNS Odorless and colorless Pill form and easily slipped into someone’s drink cause amnesia Unaware of what is happening

GHB GHB is another depressant of the CNS Was available as OTC for bodybuilders to create muscle mass and decrease fat Liquid form Linked to sexual assault

K ETAMINE Known as special K Anesthetic used in medical procedures for humans and animals Usually snorted or sprinkled over marijuana or tobacco and smoke Powerful and only small amount may cause serious health effects Hallucinations Memory loss Respiratory failure

A NABOLIC STEROIDS Synthetic substances related to the male sex hormones Sometime prescribed to treat growth problems, lung diseases, and skin conditions Similar to the male hormone testosterone Help build muscle mass Enhances the development of male characteristics
