2 What is Marijuana?  Drug made from a cannabis plant  Can be a stimulant, depressant, & hallucinogen  Active ingredient is THC  Will show up in blood & urine tests

3 Short term effects of marijuana?  High=spacey  Loss of understanding  Drains motivation  Paranoia- hallucinations  Stays in body for up to 30 days

4  Mixing marijuana with PCP (angel dust) is called Super Grass.  Mixing it with heroin is called A-Bomb.

5 Stimulants and Depressants  These include :  Crack/Cocaine  Methamphetamines  Amphetamines  Tranquilizers  Barbiturates

6 What is Crack/Cocaine?  A chemical  Usually found as white powder  Crack is the “street” name for Cocaine

7 How do people get cocaine into their body?  Most people snort the powder through their nose  Some smoke it or inject it as well

8 What does it do when it gets inside your body?  Affects Central Nervous System  Increases blood pressure and heart rate which leads to paranoia and brain seizures.

9 Methamphetamines  Addictive Stimulant  Produced in illegal labs  Causes Hallucinations  Violent Behavior  Brain Damage

10 This is what Meth can do:  Cause cavities and tooth loss  Cause you to lose interest in activities  Cause a person to make bad decisions such as: Have unprotected sex Have unprotected sex Use dirty needles Use dirty needles  Increases likelihood of HIV/AIDS

11 Amphetamines  Stimulant  Medically used to do the following:  Overcome depression  Lesson the appetite  “Speed”

12 Tranquilizers and Barbiturates  Tranquilizers:  Depressant used to calm nervous patients and is easily addicting  Barbiturates  Depressant that is used to treat sleep disorders and seizures

13 Date Rape Drugs & Hypnotics  Depressants used to sexually assault a person without knowing it is happening  GHB and Rohypnol (roofies)  Both Hypnotics  Slipped into drink to cause a person to blackout

14 Hallucinogens  Causes a person to see imaginary things and distort real images in his/her mind.  Common side effects are: Hallucinations Depression Terror

15 What are some Hallucinogens?  Ecstasy  Mushrooms- shrooms  LSD (Acid)  PCP (Angel Dust)  Other club drugs

16 What are these drugs?  Ecstasy—Stimulant that causes extreme lows, kidney failure, & death after just 1 use.  Shrooms—Psychedelic substance in a mushroom that causes euphoria and hallucinations  LSD—Acid—comes in pills, gelatin squares, or is licked off paper—causes intense terror and flashbacks.  PCP---Angel Dust—causes a loss in the sense of time and space leading to confusion and death.

17 How do these drugs make people react?  Flashbacks  Trip—can last for days  Paranoia  Plateauing Effect  Overdosing

18 Inhalants  Where the inhaler sniffs or inhales the vapors to get high.  Common inhalants: Nitrous Oxide Shoe polish Gasoline Household cleaners Poppers, Snappers, Isobutyl

19 Other Drugs  Narcotics=pain killers Morphine, Codeine, Vicodin  Heroin=Smack

20 What is Heroin  Processed from morphine  Extracted from the Asian poppy plant  Can inject it, snort it, or smoke it  White or brown powder

21 What are some health hazards?  Fatal overdose  Collapsed veins  Infectious diseases Such as HIV/AIDS Hepatitis
