2 Lesson 1 Psychological dependence: A drug abuser believes that a drug is needed in order to feel good or to function normally Physiological dependence: A drug abuser develops a chemical need for a drug and experiences symptoms of withdrawl when the effects of the drug wear off Drug use can create problems that affect a users physical, mental/emotional, and social health

3 Lesson 2 Marijuana is considered a possible gateway drug
A gateway drug is a drug that may lead the user to try other, more dangerous drugs Marijuana Impairs short term memory, reaction time, concentration and coordination THC, the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, is stored in body fat and traces of it can be present in the blood for as long as a month

4 Lesson 2 A health risk of marijuana in females is a risk of infertility Some examples of inhalants include solvents, aerosols, glues, paints, varnishes and gasoline Anabolic-androgenic steroids are synthetic substances similar to male sex hormones

5 Lesson 3 Psychoactive drugs change the functioning of the central nervous system The effects on a teens developing brain and body can be especially developing Amphetamines increase your blood pressure, increase your heartbeat, breathing, cause heart failure and may lead to death One of the main dangers of stimulants is ADDICTION Alcohol is a commonly used depressant

6 Lesson 3 Combining barbiturate wish alcohol can be fatal
Codeine is a highly addictive ingredient in some prescription cough medicines Heroin is a processed from of morphine that is injected, snorted, or smoked Oxycodone contains a strong OPIATE Ecstasy is both a stimulant and an hallucinogen Marijuana is an hallucinogenic drug that acts as both a stimulant and a depressant

7 Additional Notes: Hallucinogens have NO medical use
Narcotics can be VALUABLE for pain relief
