Agenda/Framework  Leadership Discussion  Core Competencies  Qualities of Leadership  Styles of Leadership  Stretching Your Organization  Evaluate This Session

What personal qualities are essential to being an effective leader?

Levels of Learning  Unconsciously Competent  Consciously Competent  Consciously Incompetent  Unconsciously Incompetent

Core Competencies  Taking Risks  Making Decisions  Delegating  Inspiring  Visioning (Peter Drucker)

Thoughts on Leadership  Leadership is influencing people and results to have a positive impact in your world.  Holding a leadership position is not the same as being a leader. You’re a leader because of your actions.  Anyone can be a leader.  Your job in life is to use your gifts to make a difference. And that means leading in some way, no matter what role you play.  You have the ability and opportunity to act as a leader, no matter where you work, serve, or play. (Sherry Essig)

8 Essential Qualities  Develop self-awareness - Enables you to be more conscious of your attitudes, reactions, choices, words, and actions - You’ll be more aware of the impact all of those have on the people around you.  Be of service – When you focus your actions on others, good things happen.  Own your actions and impact - No excuses. No denial. No blaming. No whining. Accept responsibility, learn something useful, and keep moving.  Grow and support others - Give credit where credit is due. Master the art of constructive feedback. Help others be successful.  Be curious - Curiosity is a powerful tool. It stimulates creativity, both yours and those around you.  Speak hard truths - Name the elephant in the room.  Mind your manners  Nourish yourself - When you practice self-care, you’re more clear-headed, patient, receptive, resilient, and just plain easier to be around.

QUALITIES of LEADERSHIP  Beliefs  Confidence  Self-awareness  Trust  Power & Ambition (Leadership Therapy)

Beliefs  What you believe about  Your self  Your work  Beliefs are at the core of your being – they must be communicated to those on your team.

Confidence  Know who you really are, and for whom you are living your life.  Come to terms with your own aspirations and ideals.  Don’t get stuck on internal criticisms.

Self-awareness  By fully understanding ourselves – our motivations, beliefs, relationship w/success, and blind spots - we become less absorbed.  We don’t feel the need to focus all of our attention internally on our own needs, feelings, and personal agendas.

Trust  A spoken or unspoken contract between people that permits them to articulate their expectations  Leaders feel safe confiding in, being vulnerable with, giving feedback to, or disagreeing with each other.

Power & Ambition  Ambition is the cornerstone on which power rests.  Positive ambitions help us achieve goals through desire and tenacity.  Focus not only on results but on the journey; ensure that it is as fulfilling and rewarding as possible for all those involved.

Leadership Styles The Ambassador Encourages people to break new ground The Advocate Champions a cause The Creative Builder Innovates The Truth Seeker Assures that things are equitable The People Mover Focuses on helping others The Experienced Guide Advises and coaches others

Stretching Your Organization  Innovate  Light the candle of innovation to show others the way.  Take Risks  Stretching means taking chances.  Improve a Little Each Day  Incorporate steady improvements in your thinking (Improve 1% every day. In a year, you reach 100%).  Incorporate Risk & Innovation into Your Value Structure  Requires that you have explored/discovered your core values and those of the organization - an exploration and effort to reconcile/align your organization’s practices with its core values  Reward mistakes

Stretching Your Organization (cont’d)  Keep Close to Your Values  You have to know what they are in order to stay close to them.  Examine Yourself  It always begins with you.  It’s about self awareness and self management.  Lower Resistance to Change  People are more likely to go through change with you than for you.  All change is local  Change takes time, patience, & support (Excerpted from Peter Brinckerhoff article in Nonprofit World, Vol 21, #6)

Your Thoughts/Reflections “A good leader inspires people to have confidence in their leader. A great leader inspires people to have confidence in themselves.”
