Credits Much of the following comes from: Developing the Leader Within You, John C. Maxwell, Publisher: Thomas Nelson

Leadership isn’t: Leading and managing are not the same. Leaders need not be entrepreneurs. Leaders need not be pioneers. Leaders need not be in charge. You can lead from anywhere within a team, but you must be committed to learning how to develop yourself AND your team.

Leadership is: Self discipline, integrity, and hard work. Challenge your excuses. Stay focused on your goals. Remove your rewards until your goals are reached. Prioritize your life, your activities. Learn to shift priorities as needs change. “You cannot overestimate the unimportance or practically everything.” Place relationships above results.

Listen! Great leaders listen to the advice of their team members. They encourage their team to brain- storm and to speak up, and even to disagree with the ideas of the leader. Once a decision is made, everyone must be encouraged to accept that common vision and to implement it as well as they possibly can. The leader has a responsibility to explain his or her decisions to the team. Ideally, most decisions come from the team.

Work Smart, not so Hard “Efficiency is the foundation for survival, effectiveness is the foundation of success.” Find opportunities for fun activities. Make humor a regular ingredient of your interactions with your team, but be careful to respect everyone. Establish a “work hard, play hard” view of work. Be inclusive of everyone. Not everyone can be in your inner-circle, but all should enjoy your concern, your friendship.

Level 1 Leadership: Authority People do what you ask because of your authority. This is “management,” and is the lowest level of leadership. Accept your responsibilities, be authentic, ethical, consistent, fair, and do more than you expect of your individual team members. Be creative, question established practices.

Level 2 Leadership: Permission People follow you because they want to. Possess a genuine love for people, help your team members to succeed, see through you team member’s eyes. Do win-win, or don’t do it. Include others in your journey. Deal wisely with difficult people. Establish principles rather than making decisions case-by-case.

Level 3 Leadership: Production People follow you because of what you have done for the organization. Initiate and accept responsibility for everyone’s growth within your team. Develop accountability for success, beginning with yourself. Know and do things that give high return. Become an agent of change.

Level 4 Leadership: People Development People follow because of what you have done for them. Realize that people are your greatest asset. Place a priority on developing your team members. Be a model for them. Pour your leadership efforts into the top 20% of your team. Expose key leaders to growth opportunities. Attract others to the common goal of becoming leaders.

Level 5 Leadership: Character People follow you because of who you are. Your followers are loyal and sacrificial. You have become a statesman and are sought out by others. Your greatest joy comes from watching others grow. You transcend the organization.

Leadership is Influence Great leaders empower their followers. They are not afraid to be overtaken by their followers. They believe that empowering others is more productive than relying on individual achievement. They are role models, encouragers, and coaches for their team members and they give their team members permission to succeed. They build teams.

Leadership is Founded on Prioritization. Great leaders realize that they cannot know and do everything needed by the organization. They train, trust, and delegate tasks for which their skills, special knowledge, or level of responsibility isn’t needed. Professors are indemnified by the university against losses due to lawsuits. Staff members may not be.

Leadership is Founded on Trust. Transfer authority to your team members. Publicly show confidence in them – defend them when necessary. Discipline them in private, but be sure of the facts first. Take responsibility for their mistakes. Supply them with feedback – help them set personal growth goals – help them monitor their progress. Release them to continue on their own.
