Main Verbs: Action vs. Linking  Action: shows mental or physical action  Action verb may possibly lead to  A direct object  An indirect object  Adverbs  Linking: indicates a relationship between subject and predicate part/word in a sentence Linking verb leads to one of these predicate words:  Predicate noun (gives a name or role for a person  Predicate pronoun (identifies)  Predicate adjectives (describes)

Action  Example:  Mr. Smola sold a bike.  Find verb: sold  Find subject: who or what sold?  Mr. Smola  Find direct object: verb + what?  Sold what? = bike Direct object (object or person acted upon)
