Nouns Functions of a Noun: Subject- “who/what the sentence is about” Example: The little dog ran away from home. Object of Preposition- the noun at the end of the phrase Example: She sat in a seat away from the door. Predicate nominative- the noun in the predicate part of the sentence that reNAMES the subject Example: Mrs. Nelson was the best teacher. Direct object- the noun that directly receives the action Example: The ball hit the wall. Indirect object- the noun that does not receive the action directly Example: She sent Natasha a birthday card.

Pronouns Any job a noun can have a pronoun can also have

Verbs Verbs serve to tell what is being said about the subject Also known as the PREDICATE Transitive- moves action from subject to predicate Intransitive- no action is passed (usually linking verbs) Active- the subject is actively participating Passive- the subject is not currently doing the action Be careful not to confuse GERUNDS with verbs!

Adjectives Describe nouns or pronouns MUST be located near the word it is modifying Can serve be- Predicate Adjectives Adjectives in the predicate part of the sentence that describes the subject

Adverbs Must be located near the words that they modify

Prepositions Phrases must be end with a noun

Conjunctions Use commas with conjunctions Use semicolons with SOME conjunctions
