1 Parts of Speech Review Part 2 (You ’ ll learn to love these PowerPoints.)

2 Nouns  Functions of a Noun:  Subject- “who/what the sentence is about”  Example: The little dog ran away from home.  Object of Preposition- the noun at the end of the phrase  Example: She sat in a seat away from the door.  Predicate nominative- the noun in the predicate part of the sentence that reNAMES the subject  Example: Mrs. Nelson was the best teacher.  Direct object- the noun that directly receives the action  Example: The ball hit the wall.  Indirect object- the noun that does not receive the action directly  Example: She sent Natasha a birthday card.

3 Pronouns  Any job a noun can have a pronoun can also have

4 Verbs  Verbs serve to tell what is being said about the subject  Also known as the PREDICATE  Transitive- moves action from subject to predicate  Intransitive- no action is passed (usually linking verbs)  Active- the subject is actively participating  Passive- the subject is not currently doing the action Be careful not to confuse GERUNDS with verbs!

5 Adjectives  Describe nouns or pronouns  MUST be located near the word it is modifying  Can serve be-  Predicate Adjectives  Adjectives in the predicate part of the sentence that describes the subject

6 Adverbs Must be located near the words that they modify

7 Prepositions  Phrases must be end with a noun

8 Conjunctions Use commas with conjunctions Use semicolons with SOME conjunctions
