What is Industrialization? The development of industries for the machine production of goods Industrialization was possible because of advances in the agricultural revolution

The Early Industrial Revolution Industrial revolution started in Britain due to the countries –Land –Labor –Wealth –Population –Resources

Textile Revolution Inventions modernize the cotton industry –Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, creating a faster way of removing the seeds from cotton –John Kay invented the flying shuttle, used wheels to weave fabric –James Hargreaves invented the Spinning Jenny an improved flying shuttle that was powered by water Britain took advantage of these inventions revolutionizing the textile industry, as a result they clothed the world

Transportation Revolution Inventions revolutionize transportation –James Watt a Scottish instrument maker invented first efficient steam engine –American inventor Robert Fulton invented the steam boat –George Stephenson created the most efficient locomotive Rail ways and roads changed life in Britain and in the world it created –Jobs, cheaper products, boosted industry

Urbanization Industrialization shifted traditional life, people made a higher wages in the factory then on the farm this caused: –urbanization, or the movement to and building of cities –Rapid population growth in areas that where rich in sources of energy (water and coal)

Conditions Rapid population growth was fast the effects caused horrible living and working conditions –Living conditions consisted of unsanitary environment, inadequate education, security, and poor housing (working class life span was 17 years) –Working conditions were horrible consisting of long work hours (14 hours 6 days a week), unclean, life altering injuries, and child labor

Working Classes Industrialism created an enormous amount of wealth Increase of money created such a large middle class it has to spilt into two groups –Upper middle class: government employees, doctors, lawyers, managers of factories, mines, and shops, life improved –Working class: laborers or factory workers, life worsened

Industrialization Spreads The United States of America along with other European nations that where fortunate to acquire(d) specific resources (water, iron, & coal) began to industrialize Large business’s raised money to fund their company by selling stocks, which created corporations or multiple owners of a company

World Changing Technology Light bulb –Invented by Thomas Edison Aircraft –Invented by the Wright Brothers (There is some skepticism about them being first) Telegraph & Telephone –A number of inventers contributed to the telegraph –Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone Automobile –A number of inventers contributed to a propelled vehicle (combustion engine)

Economic Philosophy Economist developed: –Capitalism: Little government control, free market, private owned, profit & competition –Socialism: Government controls industry to promote equality –Communism: People control industry, no private property, everything shared equally

Reform Labor Unions –Voluntary groups of workers designed to use strategies such as a threat of strike or refusal to work to improve working conditions Law Reforms –Child Labor –Wages/Hours –Women's Rights –Slavery
