2 What is the National Homeland Security Council?

3 It was created after the 9-11 terror attacks and advises the President on domestic security

4 What is the White House Office?

5 A group of advisors that have immediate access to the President, contains the communications office, speech writers, press secretary.

6 Some of the limits to the President’s power include…

7 The Congressional veto override, the bill of rights, House can file impeachment charges, public opinion helps/hurts, the Constitution.

8 What is the War Powers Act?

9 Passed in 1973 in response to the end of the Vietnam War, it limits the President’s authority in committing American troops in combat.

10 The President is also the Chief Executive. What does that mean?

11 It means he is the one to insure that the laws passed by Congress are faithfully enforced.

12 What are executive orders?

13 Rules passed by the President that have the force of law and apply to the bureaucracy.

14 What is the NSC?

15 The National Security Council, created after WWII to advise the President and coordinate American military and foreign policy.

16 What is amnesty?

17 When the President grants a pardon for certain behavior to an entire group of people, like Gerald Ford’s amnesty to Vietnam War draft dodgers.

18 What is the executive office of the President?

19 Created to directly assist the President, contains the OMB, the NSC, the National Homeland Security Council, Council of Economic Advisors & the White House Office.

20 What is the general role of the President’s cabinet?

21 First, they run their respective departments, but they also advise the President on the goings-on in their department.

22 What is a reprieve?

23 Is the when the President postpones the carrying out of a sentence, most often with the Death Penalty. We’re going to kill you, but we’ll hold off a week or so just to make sure we got it right.

24 What does Article II grant the President?

25 Broad but specific powers…commander-in-chief of the military, head of the executive branch, power to appoint federal court judges.

26 What is the cabinet?

27 Heads of the 15 executive departments, State, Justice, Treasury and Defense are the most influential, but they all have their roles to play in the executive branch.

28 What it the informal presidential power?

29 Not written down, but every President defines the office…Jefferson buying Louisiana Purchase, T. Roosevelt and the Panama Canal, FDR expanding the government’s role in the economy, Lincoln suspending the write of habeas corpus during the Civil War.
