1 Minerals – Rocking with Quizlet and Prezi
Time to view and REVIEW, first you will review and practice vocabulary describing and identifying minerals. SUBSTITUTION Technology acts a direct substitute, with no functional improvement Go to quizlet using the link provided Study using flashcards option When you are comfortable with the vocabulary, try playing either gravity or matching game. After you play through one time, record the game you chose and your score. Next, take a practice test and record your results. For more practice, go to the prezi on the link below. This task uses: & Learning Objective(s): Review vocabulary Review characteristics of minerals TEACHER NOTES: Teacher’s name/ Michael School: Iowa High School Louisiana State Standard: ESS 17, SI 7 & SI 22 Grade Level/Subject: 8th grade/Earth Science Special Directions/Considerations: Activity Evaluation: Score from Quizlet test and time from Quizlet game Prerequisites for students:

2 A Puzzling Minerals Let’s see what you remember. Next, you will watch a quick video on EdPuzzle and answer a few questions about minerals. AUGMENTATION Technology acts as a direct tool for substitution with some functional improvement. Use the link below to watch a video showing how to test and identify minerals and answer questions. Do not sign in, watch the video as a guest Record your score for the video. This task uses: Learning Objective(s): Go over procedures used in testing and identifying minerals TEACHER NOTES: Teacher’s name/ Michael School: Iowa High School Louisiana State Standard: ESS 17, SI 7 & SI 22 Grade Level/Subject: 8th grade/Earth Science Special Directions/Considerations: Activity Evaluation: Score from EdPuzzle video questions Prerequisites for students:

3 Turning the Key, a Dichotomous key that is…
Next you will create a dichotomous key and record the description of one mineral with Educreations app. MODIFICATION Technology allows for the creation of new tasks that were previously not conceivable Review the process to create a dichotomous key using EdPuzzle and answer the questions for the video Do not sign in, watch the video as a guest Next create your own dichotomous key on you papers using the minerals from the lab. Once you are finished, collaborate with your group and decide together on a group dichotomous key using the educreations app on the ipad. Be sure to include pictures in the final classifications of the minerals After you have created your dichotomous key in educreations, record one of your group members as they describe the path that you would take as you classify one of your minerals using your dichotomous key. Once you are finished, post your entry onto Mr. Hardy’s blackboard page under the discussion board tab while signed into one of you screennames. This task uses: Learning Objective(s): Use data from lab to construct a dichotomous key Use dichotomous to identify minerals TEACHER NOTES: Teacher’s name/ Michael School: Iowa High School Louisiana State Standard: ESS 17, SI 7 & SI 22 Grade Level/Subject: 8th grade/Earth Science Special Directions/Considerations: Teacher must have taken BB201 to enroll students Activity Evaluation: Dichotomous key made it educreations submitted on blackboard Prerequisites for students: Student need basic knowledge of Blackboard and discussion boards

4 Powering your way to the top… with PowerPoint and Blackboard
Finally you and your group will create a PowerPoint about one mineral and upload to Blackboard then critique another groups presentation. REDEFINITION Technology allows for the creation of new tasks that were previously not conceivable Create a PowerPoint about your assigned mineral. Your PowerPoint must include AT LEAST: 5 slides 3 different pictures 2 real world applications of the mineral A brief history of the mineral Mineral Characteristics: Streak, luster, cleavage, fracture, color, hardness, any special properties that the mineral has. 2. Once you’re finished upload your document to blackboard under the discussion board tab – Mineral presentation. 3. Once your PowerPoint has been uploaded, critique a presentation from another group that is in a different class. Remember to be specific and polite in your feedback. After you are finished with your critique, find one more real world application for that group’s mineral that the original group did not list in their presentation. For your critique, use the rubric that has be given to you. Post the critique and score as a reply underneath the group’s original post. Complete the rubric on the paper. Include your add-in of the real world application on the rubric as well. 4. Turn in Rubric to the tray when you finish. This task uses: Learning Objective(s): Create PowerPoint to inform others about you assigned mineral View another groups presentation and give feedback TEACHER NOTES: Teacher’s name/ Michael School: Iowa High School Louisiana State Standard: ESS 17, SI 7 & SI 22 Grade Level/Subject: 8th grade/Earth Science Special Directions/Considerations: Student groups will drawn assigned minerals from a hat before creating PowerPoint; Teacher must have taken BB201 to enroll students; Rubric attached, Teacher will use rubric to grade completed ppts with one extra category – successfully critique another groups ppt and added real world application Activity Evaluation: successful submission of ppt into Bb, critique on another groups submission, group rubric completed Prerequisites for students: Student need basic knowledge of Blackboard and discussion boards

5 Student groups will use this rubric to critique another groups presentation
Teacher will use this rubric with one added category; Critique: 3= group has completed and turned in all 3 rubric and provided feedback to another group and successfully added one real world application 2=Missing 1 of the following: completed rubric, replied with helpful critique in discussion board, added real world application 1=Missing 2 of the following: completed rubric, replied with helpful critique in discussion board, added real world application
