How to access the Heritage Christian Schools Learning Commons Resources 1

2 To Find the library, go to the HCOS main page - click on the Learning Commons tab on the right hand side. You will go to the Learning Commons website.

The top tabs of the website will take you to information for the Library, Weblinking, subscriptions, Overdrive E-library and more! 3

Click on the How to use the Library icon for access and FAQ information 4

To find the Resource kit descriptions click on the Homeschooling Resources tab. They are listed by grade. 5

Here you will find a list of kits by Grade. Click on the link to view the description, parent guide and student pages. 6

You can view/download the parent guide which has clickable links and you can download the student pages if available. Guides and student pages are available in the L4U library. Click on the title of the unit study and scroll down to Resources. 7

You can access the Library Catalogue from the drop down menu under the Library tab, or click on the L4U Library Catalogue icon further down the page. 8

Heritage Christian Schools Learning Commons L4U Homepage. Click on Login in top right hand corner. 9

Log in using your last name or the client code from the L4U (starts with a P and is 6-8 digits long), and the password. 10

On the MY PROFILE page You will see what you have out and when it is due, Total number of items out, Fines/charges, Renewal icon, My History icon and the Advanced Bookings icon. 11

The little gear icon on the top right hand corner allows you to customize your settings. 12 * Settings can be changed at any time while you are searching for items, which is helpful if you want a different Display setting. * If you find the Details Balloon annoying, you can disable it. * IPAC skin – change the background!

Click on Messages tab to find updated information. To find links to helpful sites, Click on the LINKS tab 13

14 Click on the HELP icon in the top right corner on any screen. L4U provides a Help File with an index so you can find information quickly!

Searching the IPAC - Click on the Home Tab: Quick Search is used for word or phrase searching. L4U defaults to a keyword search. You can also search by Subject, Author, Series etc. 15

Use Topic Searches to find specific resources ie. Unit Study kits 16

Scroll through the list using the Left or Right arrow and Click on the desired Topic. 17 Topics are organized by Dewey number and each sub-topics.

The 001 Resources topic lists homeschool materials and Unit Study kits. 18

Click on an image and the search results are displayed. Below is the Details option with the Space IPAC skin : 19

A MultiSeek search is a more specific search option. You can choose between Boolean operators, and can build a complex search string. In this example a KEYWORD search was done for chemistry OR electricity, and it was limited to EDUCATION RESOURCES which is the curriculum designation. If ANY MEDIA was chosen, the results would be broader and would include results that may not be as relevant. 20

Federated Search and Ebooks When searching you may find that we only have an ebook version. You may see results in the Overdrive tab. To take the book out, you must click on the Overdrive Tab; you can’t book it in L4U. 21

The Overdrive tab shows titles available. Click on the one you want. You will then need to log into Overdrive to continue to the ebook. 22

Booking Items: Search, then select items from results. Click Add or Update Bookbag. 23

Viewing Items in the Bookbag Display the Bookbag by clicking either the Display Bookbag button available from the search results screen or the Bookbag link in the task bar from any screen 24

Placing an IPAC Booking Reservation 25 From the search results or bookbag, choose a title. On the item detail page, click Place a Booking.

Step 1 - Choose Date and Settings screen. In the field provided or using the pop up calendar, enter the Date Required. This is the start of you loan period. The return date will be calculated automatically. Click Submit 26

If the requested date is unavailable, Step 2 - Date Adjustments appears with any date adjustment and the reason it occurred. Select the next best booking period and Click Submit 27

Step 3 - Confirmation appears. Click Confirm Alternatively, Click Go Back and enter an new date. Step 4 - Booking Details appears. Click either Home or Return to Search to continue 28

29 Placing Multiple Bookings from a Bookbag Using the bookbag feature of L4U iPAC, users can place a booking on multiple items at one time. However, items must be grouped by date required, as all items in the bookbag are booked at the same time, for the same dates. 1. Once all items have been added to the bookbag, Click Bookbag in toolbar. 2. Click Place a Booking on Current Bookbag

3. In Client For Date, Enter the date for which the booking is required or Click the calendar to the right of the field and select the date from the pop-up calendar. 4. Click Check Availability 30

31 5. A list appears outlining which items can be booked for the requested time period and those that cannot. 6. A screen appears listing the items booked and the due date for each. To place the booking on the available items, click Confirm.

32 FAQ Use the Bookbag feature to book all of your items for a specific time period! Parent Guides and student pages can be downloaded from the L4U catalogue. Click on the title, then scroll down to Resources. Due dates are automatically calculated by the system. Your items will be shipped to you - no need to contact the library to arrange for delivery. If you are local, you will receive an notification that your items are ready for pick up. You have only ONE Client Code and Password that is used for both the Library and the Overdrive E-Library. You can use your last name instead of your client code for L4U only. Students can take out e-books, but they cannot place bookings for the physical library. Items can only be booked on the PARENT account.
