1 How to access the Heritage Christian Schools Learning Commons

2 You will go to the main Library website.
To Find the library, go to the HCOS main page - click on the Learning Commons tab on the right hand side. You will go to the main Library website. The Learning Commons website has many great links to check out: LibAnswers – ask any questions you have about the learning commons here! Ning, Overdrive E-Library, Book clubs and more. 3 To find the Resource kit descriptions click on the Homeschooling Resources tab. They are listed by grade. SWiebe 2012

4 Here you will find a list of kits by Grade
Here you will find a list of kits by Grade. Click on the link to view the description, parent guide and student pages. SWiebe 2012

5 You can view the parent guide which has clickable links and you can download the student pages.
Guide and student pages can be used even if kit is not available. Student pages are no longer supplied by the library. Parents can print the pages they want and as many copies as they need. SWiebe 2012

6 The top tabs of the website will take you to information for the Library, Weblinking, subscriptions, Overdrive E-library and more! Under the Library tab you will find Library hours, the Catalogue and How to use the Library.

7 You can access the Library Catalogue from the drop down menu under the Library tab, or click on the library card icon further down the page.

10 Click on the Catalog tab
Click on the Catalog tab. The Visual search screen has various categories to help you find items. For example: click on the Resources Icon. Visual Search has many categories and we create new ones to help you find the materials you need. SWiebe 2012

11 We have Supplemental/Manipulative kits that can be used to enhance what you are teaching. They include games, DVDs, pattern blocks etc. We also have Unit Study kits that contain everything you need to teach a particular subject. Under Resources are listed various categories of resources we have. Unit study kits contain everything needed to teach that particular subject. They cover the learning outcomes for specific subjects. There is a limit of 3 unit studies per family at one time. There is no limit for the supplementary kits. SWiebe 2012

12 You can sort the list by Title, author , call number etc

13 You can also locate unit studies by subject under the Science or Socials Studies Icons: Kits can also be found by subject so for Socials Kits click on Socials Studies icon, for Science go to the Science Icon. 14 Click on Canadian History Icon Sort by Relevance or Title Choose the item you want to reserve by clicking the Details button or Title Example: Click on Socials Studies, then Canadian History Icon. Sort by Relevance. Choose the item you want to reserve. SWiebe 2012

15 The title details page gives you a lot of information: One copy is available, Weblink to Enchanted Learning, Links to other resources Grade level, Add to personal list (use to save your searches) Click HOLD IT icon to place a reserve. 16 NEVER use the “as soon as possible” option
NEVER use the “as soon as possible” option. Click the drop down menu and use reserve for a specific date! It is best to reserve for a specific date as you will be given priority over asap requests. You don’t know if the item is really available until you check the calendar that appears when reserving. Click the drop down menu and use reserve for a specific date! 17 Place your Reserve: Use the Calendar to find open dates for your item and click on the date you want to receive it. Count ahead 8 weeks to find the due date and click on it. SAVE Use the Calendar to find open dates for your item and click on the date you want to receive it. Red indicates when the item is not available. It will show up in the “from” box. Then count ahead 8 weeks to find the due date and click on it. It will fill in the “to” box. If you want to change your dates, click in the “from” and/or “to” box and delete the date first. Once done, click SAVE. A confirmation will appear on screen if the dates selected are available. You items will be shipped to you unless you are local. You do not need to contact the library to arrange for them to be sent. SWiebe 2012

18 Then count ahead 8 weeks to find the due date and click on it
It will fill in the “to” box. If you want to change your dates, click in the “from” and/or “to” box and delete the date first. Once done, click SAVE. You can delete your own holds by Logging in and going to the My Info Tab.

19 What happens next? If the item is available, a note will appear stating it has been reserved. You may see a note that states that you can pick up the item – this is only relevant for local families Your reserves are sent to the librarian for approval Once approved they are in the system. You do not need to contact the library about arranging delivery. We will ship to you as soon as the items are available. If you are local, you will receive an stating your items are ready for pick up.

20 You can also search using the Basic tab and search by Keyword, Title, Author, Subject or Series. Type the title of a book in the Find box and hit “enter” on your keyboard. The system will automatically search by Keyword. If you are searching for a series, click on the Series Icon etc. Type the title of a book in the Find box and hit “enter” on your keyboard. 21 MY INFO tab – see items out,
renew items, check fines, review all of your holds, and view recommended titles. You cannot delete your own reserves. You can check your account to review what you have already reserved. You can also renew items by clicking the individual “renew” button or click Renew All for the entire list. Items may not renew if they are needed to fill a reserve for another family or if you have reached your renewal limit. SWiebe 2012

22 Details to remember: All loans are 8 weeks
Limit of 3 unit study kits per family -1 unit study per subject per grade (1 gr. 5 Science & 1 gr. 5 Socials unit study at one time) Supplementary kits are not included in the unit study total – no limit Limit of 4 media items (DVDs, CDs, CD roms, E-Reader) Total limit per family is 25 items at one time. You can place up to 75 reserves, so plan your year! You can delete your own reserves when you go to the My Info tab Check your account using MY INFO tab to see your due dates and reserves.
