CANCER

CANCER IS UNCONTROLLED GROWTH AND REPRODUCTION OF CELLS RESULTING IN DESTRUCTION OF THE HEALTHY TISSUE. MOST COMMON CANCER TYPES ARE BREAST, PROSTATE, LUNG AND BOWEL CANCERS.

CANCER CAN PRESENT IN MANY WAYS, BUT THE MOST COMMON SYMPTOMS OF CANCER ARE: BREAST LUMP PERSISTING COUGH CHANGE IN BOWEL HABBITS BLOOD IN URINE, STOOLS OR VOMIT NEW ASYMETRICAL, IRREGULAR OR LARGE MOLES WITH VARYING COLOUR UNEXPLAINED WEIGHT LOSS

DIAGNOSIS OF CANCER: EARLY DIAGNOSIS COULD BE MADE BY ATTENDING THE SCREENING PROGRAMS SUCH AS CERVICAL SMEAR AFTER THE AGE OF 25, BREAST SCREENING AFTER THE AGE OF 49 AND BOWEL CANCER SCREENING AFTER THE AGE OF 65. IF ANY CHANGES IN BODY ARE SUSPECTED, CONTACTING THE FAMILY DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE IS IMPORTANT FOR EARLY DETECTION.

TREATMENT OF CANCER: TREATMENT DEPENDS ON THE TYPE AND POSITION OF THE CANCEROUS TISSUE. THERE ARE CURRENTLY 3 MAIN TYPES OF TREATMENT: CHEMOTHERAPY (USING MEDICATIONS) RADIOTHERAPY (USING X-RAY) SURGERY (REMOVING CANCEROUS TISSUE)

THE RISK OF HAVING CANCER COULD BE DECREASED BY: HEALTHY EATING PERFORMING REGULAR EXERCISE NOT SMOKING
