1 Cancer

2 What is Cancer? How it affects the body.
A group of diseases that involves a rapid, uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. Cancer harms the body by destroying healthy tissues. Tumor- Mass of tissue formed by cancerous cells. Malignant=cancerous Benign=not cancerous Metastasis- The spreading of cancer to other parts of the body from where it first develops. Can grow into surrounding tissues or break away and travel though blood vessels or lymph vessels. Can be cured if detected early!

3 Causes of Cancer Heredity- inherit genes that change, mutate into too rapidly. Oncogene- normal gene that has changed into a cancer-causing gene. Environment- contains cancer-causing agents called Carcinogens. Cause mutations in genes that control cell reproduction. Possible carcinogens: UV light X-rays Tobacco products Asbestos Pesticides

4 Types of Cancer

5 Detecting and Treating Cancer
Tests The key to curing cancer is early detection and treatment! Regular screening tests(mammograms, chest x-rays, physicals) Biopsy- removing small tissue sample for testing Treatments Depends on type, location, and stage of development Surgery- remove part or all of tumor Radiation- kill cancer cells/slow tumor growth Chemotherapy- drugs used to slow reproduction of cancer cells Immunotherapy- drugs to stimulate the body’s immune system to attach cells Remission- signs/symptoms disappear, after 5 years considered cured

6 Preventing Cancer Early detection is key!
Self-examining your body for abnormal lumps. Routine/regular check-ups with your doctor. Behaviors that decrease the risk of cancer: NO tobacco Avoid alcohol Protective clothing/sunscreen Diet low in saturated fats and cholesterol Exercise regularly No unnecessary X-rays Avoid known carcinogens
