El Subjuntivo Part I: Verbs of Influence and Verbs of Emotion

When do I use the subjunctive? 1) The sentence must have two different subjects. 2) The first part of the sentence will always be in the indicative and the second part is the subjunctive. 3) The subjunctive will follow expressions of feelings, hopes, wishes, preferences, recommendations about a situation or what someone else is doing.

Verbs of Influence The subjunctive mood is used to say that one person influences the actions of another.

Verbs of Influence These “verbs of influence” can be considered as indirect commands.

Verbs of Influence A subjunctive sentence will have 2 parts, each with a different subject, connected by the word “que.”

Verbs of Influence The first part:present indicative (verb that requires the subjunctive+ que + the second part in present subjunctive (what should happen)

Verb of influence in the present indicative +que verb in the subjunctive + Must be 2 different subjects!!!

When one subject advises, wants, insists, hopes, recommends, tells, asks, begs + thatanother subject does something +

2 subjects  I want to study.  Yo quiero estudiar. (indicative) Not subjunctive (only 1 subject)  I want Chela to study.  Yo quiero que Chela estudia.  Yo quiero que Chela estudie.

(Verbs of Influence)  aconsejar – to advise  decir (e  i)- to say, to tell  insistir en – to insist in  necesitar-to need to  pedir (e  i)-to ask for  permitir- to permit

Words to express HOPES (Verbs of Influence)  preferir (e  ie) – to prefer  prohibir- to prohibit  querer (e  ie) – to want  recomendar(e  ie) – to recommend  rogar-(o  ue)-to beg  sugerir(e  ie)-to suggest

1 st verb2 nd verb -indicative -verb of influence +que word in the subjunctive + Subjects must be different!!!!

Verbs of Emotion  alegrarse de-to be happy  desear – to want  enfadarse – to be angry  enojarse- to be angry  esperar – to hope  lamentar – to be sorry  sentir – to regret / to be sorry  sentirse – to feel

Verbs of Emotion  temer – to fear that  Ojalá que – expresses hope Always followed by subjunctive! Always followed by subjunctive!  Verbs like “gustar”  gustar-to like  encantar – to love  molestar – to bother  sorprender – to surprise

Verbs of Emotion ¡Me alegro de que la clase tenga sus libros! ¡Ojalá que los estudiantes saquen buenas notas!
