2 Expresando emociones In Spanish, the subjunctive mood is always used in the subordinate clause when the main clause expresses emotions such as fear, pity, hope, regret, sorrow, surprise and anger. Again, the subject of the subordinate clause must be different from the subject of the main clause. The reaction is to what another person does or is unable to do.

3 Examples: Me alegro de que estés aquí. I am happy you are here
Espero que el bus llegue a tiempo. I hope the bus arrives on time. Verbs that express emotion include: Temer to fear Esperar to hope Sentir to be sorry Alegrarse de to be happy Other useful expressions: Es triste/Es una lástima que…. It’s sad/a pity Ojalá…. Hopefully
