Core Values To Live By: Successful Leadership Traits for Classified Leaders 1 ACSA CEL Institute 2015 Brett W. McFadden Assistant Supt. / CBO February 26, 2015

2 Wake up exercise #1 What characteristics should leaders possess? In what ways are you a leader?

1. Lead with Courage and Conviction  A belief is something you hold on to, but a conviction is something that holds you  Build your leadership house on convictions, and it will last the winds and waves of time  Be prepared for the loneliness of leadership 3

2. Service to others  If nothing else, leadership is about service  Most powerful way to effect positively on those that live and work around us – live a motivated life around them  Provide your employees a sense of meaning and satisfaction in the midst of challenges, and there will be no greater act of service 4

3. Relationships 5  This remains the key element to an education leader’s success  If number 1 and 2 are firmly in place – it will this that will be the difference between success, mediocrity, or failure  People before process  Be willing to have courageous conversations

4. Living for a cause/purpose that is larger and greater than ourselves “ What we do today, right now, will have an accumulated effect on all of our tomorrows” Alexandra Stoddard 6 What is your core mission as a leader? Declaration of who you are – not what you want to be

Living for the dot vs. living for the line 7

8 Wake up exercise #2 Make a leadership declaration: I am a __________, ____________ and __________ leader to those around me and those I serve

9 Helpful Tip As a leader, you are only going to be as “popular” as your last “yes.” Strive to be trustworthy, consistent, fair, and set a positive model of the work habits and interpersonal behaviors you value in the organization. The popularity will eventually follow. Dr. Jeff Baarstadt, Superintendent Conejo Valley USD Former CBO, Principal and Teacher
