Transformational leadership has been described by various individuals Many articles written about this style and it is considered the most popular to teach or model

4 Definition 1 According to Wikipedia:
Transformational leadership is a leadership style where one or more persons engage with others in such a way that leaders and followers raise one another to higher levels of motivation and morality

5 Definition 2 According to Tracey and Hinkin (1998), transformational leadership is a process that motivates people by appealing to higher ideas and moral values, defining and articulating a vision of the future and forming a base of credibility

7 How Common Is Transformational Leadership
Transformational leadership is often seen in various situations such as: Parents motivating their children A teacher motivating a student or students A manager motivating their staff

8 Burns MacGregor Burns first introduced transformational leadership in 1978 but not for long term care or even healthcare at the time, it was for political leadership Burns described and compared two conflicting leadership styles

9 Transactional First: Transactional leadership Example:
“If you help me THEN I will help you”

10 Transactional cont~ If it benefits “me” and I get somewhere in life then “fine” if it does not go well, the relationship can end at any point. No loyalty or support involved by either individual

11 Transformational Flip side is ‘Transformational’ Leadership
The leader works to establish a committed relationship between the leader and the follower

12 Transformational Belief that transformational leaders are facilitators of change and move the process through the organization Create a sense of possibility and vision for the future of the organization Have a desire for common goals, not “me” but “us”

Before a leader is strong enough to lead They need to have a personal transformation A leaders behavior influences and motivates others so it is very important that a leader does a “self evaluation”

Measures psychological preferences in how people perceive the world and make decisions Clifton StrengthsFinder Themes: 180 questions to help you determine your top five strengths and talents, similar to Myers-Briggs

17 How Do We Decide When you are talking about leadership style, it is a good idea to write down what want you want to be as a leader, what will your leadership “wish list” include?

18 Leading Your Staff through Change
Look at the needs of your staff and how you can best lead them through culture change and all of the day to day changes that occur within your community

19 What Qualities Make the “Best” Style?
How do you want the residents and elders to be treated? Start thinking in terms of best serving your population and then consider these qualities as what you want to model for your staff

20 Respect First and foremost is respect
You want your staff to know that you respect and appreciate them

21 Dignity You want the staff to have a sense of dignity about working for your organization to feel that they are treated with dignity and in turn that they treat the residents and elders with dignity

With transformational leadership we look for ways to bring out the best in staff To help them to grow Search for new opportunities that the staff want to participate in As the staff grow they rise to the occasion

27 What are the benefits? Research has identified many benefits to transformational leadership. Examples include~ Job satisfaction Less stress Happier residents Improvement in quality of care and safety practices

28 Summary As a leader…know your staff
Work to bring out the best in each individual Value their input and allow them to grow This is the foundation of a transformational leader!
