I. Judaism Pgs Judaism is the oldest of the three current most worshiped religions in the world. – All three major religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, are forms of monotheism—the belief in one supreme god. – The Jewish holy book is the Torah and their major leader is Abraham.

It is said that Abraham worshiped Yahweh, God, and eventually made a covenant, or agreement, to move to the land of Canaan, present day Palestine. Jews follow a list of Ten Commandments left to them by a prophet, or messenger of God, called Moses. Jewish people were forced to leave their homeland many times throughout history and have been subject to cruel treatment by many other religions.

Christianity Pgs Christianity rose to prominence in southwest Asia by spreading to Jews and non-Jews alike.

Jesus Christ began preaching in what is today Israel and taught that God loved all people, even those that had sinned. – Some believed Jesus to be a messiah, or savior, to deliver them to eternal life with God. – Some Jews and Romans felt Jesus and his disciples, or followers, were committing treason and Jesus was executed on a cross. – Jesus’ disciples proclaimed that he had risen from the dead and appeared to them which led them to preach that Jesus Christ was in fact the Son of God.

Christians were persecuted by the Roman Empire for years until it was proclaimed a lawful religion. Christianity today is broken up into three major groups—Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, and Protestants.

III. Islam Pgs The last and youngest of the major monotheistic religions is Islam. – Islam means to “surrender” to the will of Allah, or God.

Islam’s major leader, Muhammad, was born about 570 A.D. in Makkah (Mecca). Muhammad began preaching in 610 A.D. that Allah believed all people were equal and that the rich should help the poor. As Islam began to spread, the religion split into two major groups—the Sunnis and the Shiites.

The Quran is believed to be the direct word of Allah as given to Muhammad and Muslims believe it to be their most important religious text. – In it are the five pillars of faith which Muslims must abide by.
