Objectives and Essential Question Objective(s): Students will learn the key philosophers of the Enlightenment period and how their beliefs influenced people to fight for a revolution in France. How did the Enlightenment Thinkers views and beliefs make changes in the government during the French Revolution? In what ways do you see examples of the Enlightenment thinkers ideas in France Declaration of Rights for Man?

What was the Enlightenment Period The enlightenment developed as a result of the Scientific Revolution. Europeans discarded traditional beliefs and began using reason to explain the world around them. While the Scientific Revolution focused on the physical world, the Enlightenment attempted to explain the purpose of government, and describe the best form of it.

Enlightenment Thinkers Introduction These men were influential during the Enlightenment Period: The most influential Enlightenment thinkers were Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Voltaire, Baron de Montesquieu, and Jean Jacques Rousseau. Thomas Hobbes based his theories on government on his belief that man was basically greedy, selfish, and cruel.
