1 Aim: How did Enlightenment thinkers differ on the role of government?
Do Now: Which type of government do you think is best: Democracy? Absolute Monarchy? Dictatorship? WHY??

2 Enlightenment Vocabulary
Natural Laws – laws that govern human nature Enlightenment* – the period in the late 1700s in which people rejected traditional ideas & supported a belief in human reasoning Rationalism – the belief that logical thought can lead to the truth Natural Rights* – John Locke’s belief that all people have the right to life, liberty & property

3 Group Work 1. There are 5 philosophers therefore there will be 5 people in each group 2. Each person will be in charge of researching a philosopher and filling out their section on the chart 3. Each person will share their answers with their group so everyone has a complete chart #1: Thomas Hobbes #2: John Locke #3: Montesquieu #4: Voltaire #5: Rousseau

Philosophe: social thinkers in France during the enlightenment (French for Philosopher) Believed that people could apply reason to all aspects of life Five Concepts of Philosophes Reason- truth could be found through reasoning Nature- what is natural is also good and reasonable Happiness- seek well-being on earth Progress- society and humankind could improve Liberty- freedom

6 Summary: Rank the 5 thinkers of the Enlightenment from 1 – 5 and explain why you put them in this order. (1 being most important contribution, 5 being least important contribution).
