Curriculum Resources Math -Brand new math series called My Math by McGraw Hill. This new series has a fantastic technology companion which will help us to teach the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS) of Math. Reading -We will continue using our Treasures reading series also by MacMillan/McGraw Hill. Additionally, classroom literature and trade books will be used to meet the CCSS of Reading. Students will be taught to make “just right” book selections to choose quality children’s literature. Science -Science Center will continue to send science kits on a rotating basis to help teach science objectives. Social Studies -We will be using a newspaper called Social Studies Weekly to help teach social studies objectives this year. I have used this type of paper in previous grades and they are very high interest for students!

Homework Procedures Vinyl homework folders containing usually math and language arts homework will arrive home Monday evenings and will be due Thursday mornings. (LOOK FOR SPELLING LIST IN THIS FOLDER. KEEP AT HOME TO STUDY!) Students will also receive a BLUE nightly folder meant to transport notes, flyers, and corrected work home. The nightly folder must be brought back and forth to school each day. Please check the planner and folder nightly. *** Additionally, students should be reading for twenty minutes EVERYNIGHT. A monthly reading log will come home for students to keep track of their reading. Those students who return the logs by month’s end will be entered in a drawing for a small reward or coupon. I also usually give a small piece of candy to everyone who simply returns their completed log. Finally, students should be working on reviewing addition and subtraction facts the first part of the year. Later in the year, multiplication facts should be practiced.

Classroom Behavior Expectations MacGregor is a MiBlsi School. Students… M ake Safe Choices U se Respect S how kindness T ake Responsibility Specific rules and consequences will be discussed, demonstrated, and introduced during the first weeks of school. Then constant review will occur. PLEASE SEE ATTACHED GRID for MiBlsi expectations at MacGregor. Weekly behavior plan based on a point system with a time out/makeup time on Fridays. Monthly Responsibility Reward also in place. (*Some students may be following individualized behavior plans.)

Responsibility Incentives School-wide MUST awards Weekly on Friday minutes of Free Choice: Awarded if individual behavior and work completion permits (last part of day). Rewarding Responsibility: Monthly award for responsible behaviors that promote readiness and being prepared i.e.…having homework, bringing back folder and planner, having dismissal card, ready with a pencil, etc… (Monthly Reward examples…popcorn and movie, game day, popsicles, no homework coupon, etc…)

Behavior Chart Steps (Rewarded Weekly) Students must earn 12 pts. or more for the week to have Friday Free Time at end of day. Daily Point System Used on Our Behavior Chart Green 3 Points Great Day…no problems. Blue 2 Points Oops! One warning needed (One point lost). Yellow 1 Points Needed a time out in the room (Think Sheet 1). Orange 0 Point Needed a time out in a buddy room (Think Sheet 2). Red 0 Points Needed a referral and to be sent to the office. Teacher keeps track of daily points at the end of each day by looking at our behavior chart. Daily points are tracked on a clipboard and added at week’s end.

Rewarding Responsibility (Rewarded Monthly) Students will start out with 8 boxes on the Responsibility Chart for each month. It is up to them to keep the boxes. Each time they are not responsible with materials and being prepared, they may lose a box. I will be looking for: Having planner and nightly folder Having homework turned in on time. Having a pencil ready (taken care of each morning). Having dismissal card and taking care of it. Working diligently and being ready to transition when needed. Etc… (As the year progresses, and children become more responsible, they may only start out with 6 boxes or chances and then eventually to only 5 boxes each month.)

Bathroom Policy Students are expected to use the bathroom before school and after lunch. Students may also use the bathroom during mid-morning snack. *** In EMERGENCY situations, there is a sign out sheet. If your child has a medical condition, please write me a note with your signature letting me know. If your child does not have a medical condition, and they are constantly signing out, you may be contacted.

Birthdays You may send in a birthday treat for your child’s birthday. It is not required but the children really look forward to this. We currently have 20 students on the roster. I prefer to celebrate with birthday treats toward to end of the day around 3:00, but sometimes do this at morning snack as well. ***Information in this book may be subject to change as needed as the year progresses.
